  • Provide perioperative care of cardiothoracic surgical patients from consultation to discharge.
  • Critical care management of patients following cardiothoracic surgery which may include but not limited to aortic surgery, coronary artery bypass grafting, thoracic surgery, and valve surgery.
  • Collaborate with the attending physician to manage mechanical circulatory support devices (ECMO, IABP, and LVAD devices).
  • Communicate the plan of care with the multidisciplinary team including changes in the patient condition.
  • Document patient's condition and plan of care in the electronic medical record.
  • Opportunities for procedural skills common to the intensive care setting (bronchoscopy, central lines, and chest tubes).
  • Order and interpret the spectrum of diagnostic tests relative to the patient condition.
  • Respond to emergency responses and provide medical stabilization until definitive management can occur.
  • Graduate of an accredited Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant Program required.
  • Clinical experience appropriate to specific practice/ department preferred.
  • Current Nurse Practitioner (NP) or Physician Assistant (PA) license required.
  • DEA licensure required.
  • AHA BLS-HCP certification required.
  • Advanced life support is preferred and is required for those who may use a defibrillator in their practice.
  • Meets credentialing requirements.
  • Qualifies for malpractice insurance and is accepted by Carilion Clinic's malpractice insurance carrier.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with physicians and other health care providers.
  • Maintains open and supportive communications between all department members and other employees, patients and their family members.
