About The Position

As a Steampunk API Integration Developer, you will design, develop, and support system integrations that enable reliable data exchange across cloud-based environments. This role focuses on leveraging existing REST and SOAP APIs, middleware, and ETL tools to integrate SaaS platforms, databases, document repositories, and enterprise applications. You will support the full integration lifecycle—from requirements analysis and development through testing, deployment, monitoring, and ongoing support—while ensuring integrations are secure, scalable, and aligned with industry best practices.

Requirements

  • Ability to obtain and maintain a government security clearance.
  • Bachelor's degree and 3+ years of experience with integration development or API-focused development.
  • At least 5 years of total experience.
  • Proven experience developing and supporting integrations using middleware or integration platforms.
  • Demonstrated experience integrating SaaS systems, SQL databases, flat files, and enterprise applications using REST and SOAP APIs.
  • Proficiency with Java, XML, JSON, and related integration technologies.
  • Familiarity with enterprise integration frameworks and understanding of when and how to apply them.
  • Must possess an active, relevant integration or technology-related certification.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to troubleshoot complex integration issues.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience working in Agile delivery environments.
  • Familiarity with cloud-based integration architectures, microservices, and containerization concepts.
  • Exposure to DevOps practices and CI/CD pipelines.
  • Experience with or familiarity across AWS, Azure, and/or GCP environments.
  • Experience with or familiarity with ServiceNow.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to work effectively across geographically distributed teams.
  • Self-motivated, adaptable, and comfortable managing multiple priorities.

  • Ability to work onsite in Bethesda, MD.

Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, test, document, and deploy high-quality integration solutions using middleware, ESBs, and ETL tools in alignment with business and technical requirements.
  • Build and configure system-to-system integrations by consuming existing REST and SOAP APIs to enable secure and reliable data interoperability.
  • Integrate disparate systems, including SaaS platforms, SQL databases, document storage solutions, flat files, and internal enterprise applications.
  • Develop and maintain integration workflows, data mappings, and technical specifications.
  • Support the full integration lifecycle, including analysis, design, development, testing, deployment, monitoring, and enhancement.
  • Design and execute testing strategies to validate integration functionality, data accuracy, performance, and reliability.
  • Monitor integration processes, API performance, logs, and error handling to ensure operational stability.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve integration issues across development, deployment, and production environments, including break/fix support.
  • Analyze system and data flows to identify bottlenecks, inefficiencies, and opportunities for optimization.
  • Implement enhancements and improvements to existing integrations based on evolving requirements.
  • Ensure integrations adhere to security standards, coding standards, and industry best practices.
  • Collaborate with business analysts, project managers, API owners, front-end users, and other technical teams to gather requirements and deliver complete integration solutions.
  • Communicate status, risks, and technical considerations clearly to stakeholders.
  • Research and stay current on integration patterns, middleware technologies, and best practices.
  • Document operational procedures and integration best practices.
  • Participate actively in team meetings and collaborative development activities.
