About The Position

Bloodworks Northwest, a national leader in transfusion medicine, is seeking an Apheresis Specialist I to join our Apheresis Biologic team. The incumbent will be responsible for collecting blood components from donors participating in clinical research studies, maintaining supply inventory, and coordinating research projects involving donor enrollment, screening, informed consent, sample acquisition, processing, shipment, and data management in accordance with applicable protocols and standards.

Requirements

  • High School education or GED equivalent.
  • Certificate of completion or diploma from a post-secondary phlebotomy training program, OR two years of college with science and/or medical emphasis.
  • Current WA State Medical Assistant - Phlebotomist certification; WA State Medical Assistant - Certified preferred.
  • Six months to a year of Phlebotomy experience; Apheresis experience preferred.
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to follow protocols as written.
  • Highly organized, able to multi-task and work independently.

Responsibilities

  • Demonstrate knowledge of Bloodworks computer programs, including registration and accurate data entry of donor information.
  • Maintain a professional relationship with donors, ensuring their rights as research participants are protected.
  • Create, modify, maintain, and transmit electronic records in a controlled manner in conformance with FDA requirements.
  • Complete annual Competency Assessment.
  • Maintain a good working rapport with physicians, lab personnel, and fellow staff members.
  • Communicate effectively with peers to identify errors or problems and ask for help when necessary.
  • Back-up for Program Assistant as needed.
  • Comply with all applicable Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
  • Perform other incidental duties as assigned.
  • Screen potential donors/patients and evaluate their eligibility following Bloodworks policies/procedures.
  • Take vital signs including blood pressure, pulse, and temperature.
  • Record progress notes, lab values, and other donor-related information.
  • Document and perform quality controls on equipment.
  • Draw blood samples for various tests and deliver them to the proper lab for processing.
  • Set up apheresis machine and perform automated apheresis collections.
  • Explain all aspects of apheresis procedures to patients and/or donors prior to the appointment.
  • Monitor/care for donors with adverse reactions and escalate to nursing and medical staff as appropriate.
  • Restock supplies at the end of the day as needed.
  • Clean and promote preventative maintenance on equipment.
  • Troubleshoot problems on computers and other equipment as necessary.
  • Maintain a pleasant environment for donors and patients.
  • Coordinate and implement procedures to collect data from donor charts, interviews, and other sources; prepare appropriate documentation.
  • Ensure compliance with protocol guidelines and requirements of clients and regulatory agencies.
  • Perform and document all required procedures, including obtaining informed consent and study participant follow-up.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of Bloodworks' IT programs and accurately enter data.
  • Provide feedback to management on project progress and escalate issues when necessary.
