About The Position

The Animal Transport Driver is responsible for providing transport of animals from outside agencies, in state and out of state, to the Humane Society of Huron Valley (HSHV). Also responsible for maintenance and upkeep of the transport van. An animal care facility can be an emotionally challenging, high-stress, rapidly changing, and high-demand environment.  Feelings of grief and loss, secondary trauma, and compassion fatigue are not uncommon.  As such, working at HSHV requires a high degree of emotional regulation and resilience; the ability to tolerate and manage stress; adaptability to change; empathy for both animals and people; and an overall positive outlook.

Requirements

  • A valid Michigan driver’s license required.
  • Excellent driving record.
  • Ability to follow directions and able to work alone unsupervised.

Nice To Haves

  • Previous animal transport experience preferred, but not required.
  • Animal handling experience a plus!
  • Schedule is generally every-other-week: an overnight trip, and a few hours another day to clean the van/kennels. There may be changes to that, so flexible schedule is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Picking up animals from transport partners in and outside of Michigan. Loading the animals onto the truck, and with the help of HSHV volunteers and other staff, unloading them once back at the shelter.
  • Responsible for driving HSHV vehicle long distances (average 12 hours).
  • Being in regular communication with source shelters and Intake Manager.
  • Responsible for volunteer passenger on all trips, and ensuring their needs are met.
  • Keeping transport vehicle clean and free of trash and clutter.
  • Responsible for cleaning crates and transport vehicle after every use.
  • Responsible for keeping vehicle in safe and good working order. Report any repairs or maintenance needed to supervisor immediately. Responsible for drop-off and pick-up of vehicle for scheduled maintenance as needed.
  • Responsible for accurate and timely record keeping (e.g. vehicle, mileage, timecard).
  • Being the face of HSHV and interacting with rescue partners.
