Position Overview: This Animal Technician 1 Arizona (NE S CNU) position works under the direct supervision of an Animal Technician Supervisor at the Arizona Breeding Colony (ABC) for the Washington National Biomedical Research Center (WaNBRC), proving support in the care of non-human primates. Duties & Responsibilities: Perform animal care duties; provide custodial care for animals and animal facilities. Feed and water animals in accordance with prescribed diets and instructions. Transfer animals from soiled to clean enclosures, making sure to maintain individual animal identity; prepare animal quarters in accordance with specified procedures. Transfer animals from outdoor enclosures to indoor enclosures. Clean and/or sterilize cages, pans, runs and surrounding premises. including walls, floors, windows, food preparation rooms and cage washing areas according to specified procedures. Clean outdoor enclosures in accordance with specified procedures. Observe animals for obvious abnormalities and report observations. Maintain records related to feeding, care and animal identification. May lift heavy animals, cages, supplies and/or equipment. Maintain equipment and premises in accordance with specified standards; ensure that temperature, water pressure, humidity and lighting remain within acceptable ranges; read and record data; report deviations. Requirements: Physical ability to perform required work. Ability to lift, carry, push and pull up to 50 pounds. Ability to read and write in English. Must be able to work in personal protective equipment, which may include face shields, face masks, gloves, lab clothing, and booties, while performing said work indoors and/or outdoors with the elements of nature. Desired Qualifications: Documented work or volunteer history caring for animals. AALAS certification. Conditions of Employment: Employment is contingent upon successful completion of a health assessment at the contracted Occupational Health Clinic. The health assessment may include but is not limited to tuberculosis clearance, measles clearance, serum banking, immunizations, such as tetanus and vaccinia, physical exam and/or review of work health history, x-rays, and/or assessment to wear positive or negative respiratory protective equipment. These health assessments will be repeated periodically during work assignment. May be required to work with and take specific precautions, against and/or be immunized against potentially infectious agents. Specific precautions may include wearing respirators and/or protective clothing. Employee is personally responsible for following health & safety and security policies/procedures. Punctuality and a regular pattern of attendance are essential functions of the position.
