About The Position

Under limited supervision of the Comparative Medicine management and/or staff veterinarians, cares for animals and cleans facilities used in experimental and breeding colonies. Provides husbandry of animals in more specialized areas of the animal facility to include barrier and biocontainment areas and includes more technical procedures such as animal identification, collecting biological samples, and administering medications. Maintains accurate animal records. In addition to basic sanitizing supplies and equipment, may use autoclaves, necropsy equipment, and laminar flow hoods. Maintains supplies, feed, and bedding inventories and storage. Assists researchers and veterinary staff when needed. Trains technicians and cage wash staff as needed. Serves as lead in assigned area providing daily assistance to the Supervisor by helping to assure that daily tasks are completed in the area. Will be cross trained in several areas. Provides assistance to less senior employees as needed.

Requirements

  • Requires a highschool diploma and 2 or more years of experience working in animal care or an equivalent combination of education, training and/or experience from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been attained
  • knowledge of animal husbandry requirements, methods, and techniques
  • knowledge of local, state, federal regulations pertaining to animal husbandry
  • knowledge of supplies, equipment, and/or services ordering and inventory control
  • knowledge of the use and maintenance of laboratory facilities and/or equipment and procedures
  • effective communication, orally and in written format
  • Must be able to access KAFB and have reliable transportation in order to arrive at work on time on scheduled work days
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license without restrictions that impede upon the ability to use the company vehicles
