About The Position

The Animal Physiology Core Research Assistant at National Jewish Health is responsible for independently performing animal physiology testing and managing daily operations of the Animal Physiology Core (APC). This role includes equipment maintenance, executing experiments, and providing technical advice to investigators. The assistant collaborates with the APC Director on research projects and ensures compliance with regulatory standards.

Requirements

  • Doctoral degree in a relevant field preferred; Bachelor's degree required.
  • 3 years of animal experience required, with 1 year in laboratory animal species.
  • A Master's Degree and 2 years of laboratory experience may substitute for the required experience.
  • AALAS certification at the Laboratory Animal Technologist level required within 2 years of hire (not applicable if a doctorate is held).

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with advanced technical procedures related to animal physiology.
  • Strong communication skills for conveying information effectively.

Responsibilities

  • Independently perform animal physiology experiments such as lung function testing and monitoring physical endurance.
  • Assist with obtaining biofluids and tissues from animals.
  • Conduct cardiovascular hemodynamic measurement microsurgery and analyze data.
  • Operate CT scanner to obtain and analyze CT scans of animals and samples.
  • Prepare statistical tabulations using a calculator or computer.
  • Develop and oversee projects involving core equipment or assays.
  • Evaluate equipment performance and determine maintenance needs.
  • Coordinate activities for compliance with regulatory institutions by performing audits and writing SOPs.
  • Develop SOPs for techniques and equipment related to the APC.
  • Provide training for BRC staff and research staff according to NJH policies and regulatory requirements.
  • Supervise the health and well-being of animals under APC care.
