About The Position

The University of Southern California, Department of Animal Resources is seeking a very reliable, dependable, self-motivated and responsible individual for a position as Animal Laboratory Technician. The Department of Animal Resources provides optimal animal care for all animals housed at the university for biomedical research and teaching. Animal Laboratory Technicians are responsible for daily animal care, facility cleaning and sanitation, documentation of environmental conditions, and daily animal health and welfare observations, ensuring procedures adhere to regulations and guidelines. The role requires basic computer skills, the ability to lift 50 pounds, and to be on your feet for the majority of the day. Technicians must work on a schedule and be punctual. Animal care is provided every day, including weekends and holidays, across both the Health Sciences Campus and University Park Campus, which may involve scheduled rotations between campuses and working on weekends and holidays as assigned by a supervisor, in accordance with departmental standard operating procedures. Requirements

  • High school or equivalent education, or combined experience/education as substitute for minimum education.
  • 1 year of experience, or combined education/experience as substitute for minimum experience.
  • Basic computer skills.
  • Able to lift 50 pounds.
  • Able to work on your feet majority of the day.
  • Very reliable, dependable, self-motivated and responsible individual.
  • Required to work on a schedule and to be on time.
  • Animal Handling skills.
  • Demonstrate, through ideas, words and actions, a strong commitment to USC’s Unifying Values.

Nice To Haves

  • Associate Degree.
  • 2 years of experience.
  • Assistant ALT Certification with experience in a veterinary hospital kennel or animal research laboratory.

Responsibilities

  • Provide daily animal care (cleaning, feeding, and watering of animals).
  • Perform animal facility cleaning and sanitation.
  • Document appropriate environmental conditions.
  • Perform daily animal health and welfare observations to ensure all care procedures are performed according to regulations and guidelines.
  • Ensure that animals are provided care in accordance with state and federal regulations to promote physical and psychological well-being and minimize discomfort.
  • Distribute food and water to animals and ensure that food and water are free from contamination.
  • Provide environmental enrichment to animals, including exercise of larger animals as needed.
  • Provide humane euthanasia to animals as needed to minimize pain and distress and for colony maintenance, according to established protocols.
  • Evaluate animals for health and welfare on a daily basis.
  • Communicate animal health or welfare problems to veterinary staff and the Principal Investigator.
  • Perform routine cleaning of animal cages and associated animal care equipment.
  • Maintain and clean animal housing facilities.
  • Maintain cleanliness and organization of cages, equipment, and facilities.
  • Maintain inventory of storeroom supplies.
  • Maintain paper and computerized animal records, records of facility cleaning and sanitation procedures, facility environmental conditions, and use and maintenance of equipment.
  • Assist veterinarians and Principal Investigators with handling animals during procedures.
