About The Position

The Sacramento Zoo has an immediate opening for a FT Animal Keeper position with a focus on primates. Our Animal Keepers are essential members of the animal care team responsible for the daily husbandry, behavioral health, and welfare of a diverse exotic animal collection. Working under the guidance of Animal Care Supervisors, Keepers perform all aspects of animal care and contribute to a high standard of welfare, enrichment, training, and guest engagement in accordance with AZA accreditation standards. This position will require experience with primates and ideally great apes. Over time, the position may work across multiple animal sections and taxa depending on experience and operational needs. Successful candidates will demonstrate a positive attitude, be highly team-oriented, solution-focused, well-organized, and proactive in problem-solving. They should communicate clearly, work independently in a fast-paced environment, and embody the Zoo's core values of professionalism, learning, and passion for animal care in an AZA-accredited setting.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of exotic animal care, behavior, nutrition, enrichment, and medical basics
  • Familiarity with AZA accreditation standards and conservation programs
  • Ability to follow protocols and respond safely in animal and zoo-wide emergencies
  • Proficiency in basic maintenance and use of hand tools
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel) and animal record systems (e.g., ZIMS, Tracks)
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Comfortable with public speaking and guest interaction
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds and work outdoors in a variety of weather conditions
  • Minimum three (3) years paid experience as a zookeeper in a zoological setting required
  • Experience working with primates required, with great apes preferred
  • Bachelor's degree in zoology, biology, ecology, or a related field required; equivalent experience may be considered with approval
  • Valid California driver's license required with good driving record

Responsibilities

  • Prepare diets, feed, and provide fresh water to animals in accordance with daily protocols
  • Clean, disinfect, and maintain habitats, holding spaces, and service areas
  • Conduct daily observations of animal behavior and health, and document as required
  • Participate in operant conditioning and behavioral training programs
  • Implement enrichment plans to support species-specific behaviors and welfare
  • Assist with medical treatments and procedures under veterinary direction
  • Support safe capture, restraint, and transport of animals as directed
  • Monitor environmental conditions and report facility needs promptly
  • Maintain accurate records using digital systems (e.g., ZIMS, Tracks)
  • Submit detailed reports on animal condition, behavior, incidents, and daily activities
  • Communicate observations, concerns, and needs effectively with team members and supervisors
  • Participate in section meetings and cross-departmental coordination as needed
  • Assist with inventory, supply management, and pest control
  • Participate in exhibit upkeep, habitat modification, seasonal routines, and other operational tasks including supply oversight, pest control, and coordination with other departments
  • Supervise, guide, and mentor assigned volunteers, interns, and Keeper-aides in their daily activities
  • Actively participate in departmental training programs and continuing education
  • Follow all safety protocols and emergency response procedures, including participating in zoo-wide drills
  • Conduct behind-the-scenes tours and public presentations as assigned
  • Interact professionally with guests, school groups, donors, and stakeholders
  • Represent the Zoo's mission, conservation values, and animal care philosophy in all public interactions
