About The Position

The Oregon Zoo is seeking an Animal Keeper for the Marine Life area, where the successful candidate will be responsible for the daily care of marine mammals, carnivores, and a small collection of fish and invertebrates. This role is crucial in maintaining the high standards of animal welfare that the zoo is known for, as well as contributing to its conservation and education efforts. The Animal Keeper will assist in developing and updating animal care plans, protocols, and procedures, ensuring that all activities align with the zoo's mission of sustainability and conservation education. In this position, the Animal Keeper will perform SCUBA diving to clean and maintain underwater exhibits, requiring the maintenance of Dive First Aid certification and DAN O2 provider training. Safety is paramount, and the keeper will develop safe work habits while contributing to the safety of themselves, their co-workers, and the animals in their care. Record keeping is an essential part of the role, as the keeper will utilize a system to track animal diets, behavior, training, enrichment, and medical needs. Reporting any unusual conditions or illnesses in animals to management is also a critical responsibility. The Animal Keeper will engage in animal training and conditioning to facilitate cooperation during daily procedures and medical care. Additionally, they will participate in delivering educational presentations to the public and contribute to zoo-approved research and conservation projects, collaborating closely with research investigators. Working with large mammals in both free and protected contact will be part of the job, requiring a strong commitment to animal welfare and safety.
