About The Position

Disney's Animal Kingdom is looking for an Animal Keeper Associate to join the Birds team. In this role you will cultivate your animal husbandry and teamwork skills as you work with a large team of keepers, caring for a large and diverse bird collection as well as a small collection of Asian hoofstock. If selected for this hourly position, you will report to a team of Zoological Managers. This is a Casual Temporary or Seasonal role with no guarantee of weekly working hours, as hours will fluctuate based on business needs.

Requirements

  • Minimum of one-year paid animal husbandry experience in an AZA accredited facility or institution with comparable standards OR at least two years of verifiable college course work (60 semester hours)
  • Observation, evaluation and data collection skills.
  • Demonstrated strong partnering skills and ability to work on a large team.
  • Ability to meet the physical demands of the role including lifting manure, moving doors, and carrying heavy objects (bales of hay, feed bags, etc.)
  • High school degree or equivalent plus a minimum of either: paid experience as a keeper in an AZA accredited institution, or in an institution with equivalent standards, and/or at least two years of verifiable college course work (60 semester hours).

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with a wide variety of avian taxa
  • Experience working with birds in large free-flight aviaries
  • Experience working with hoofstock
  • Bachelor's or Associate's Degree in Zoology or related field preferred

Responsibilities

  • Provide day-to-day care and welfare for assigned species, including husbandry, enrichment, and operant conditioning.
  • Perform daily tasks such as cleaning, animal observation, diet preparation, and reporting medical needs or abnormal conditions to zoological managers.
  • Maintain daily accurate records, collect and log data, and ensure timely communication to management and the central animal record system.
  • Work outdoors in Central Florida weather conditions, including extreme heat and humidity.
  • Share animal information and conservation messages through guest and cast interactions.
  • Collaborate effectively within a large team and partner with maintenance, operations managers, horticulture, veterinary staff, educators, and scientists.
  • Work a flexible schedule, including early mornings (6 AM) and late evenings (up to 8 PM), as needed to support operational hours.
