About The Position

The Animal Health Technician position at the Department of Defense involves providing primary care for Privately Owned Animals (POAs) and assisting veterinary staff in various medical procedures. Requirements

  • One year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-06 grade level in the Federal service, including performing technical procedures for small animal care and supporting veterinary medical officers.
  • One full year of graduate level education in a related field such as Animal Health and Behavior, zoology, biology, chemistry, or agricultural subjects.
  • Combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position.

Nice To Haves

  • Licensed/Certified/Registered Veterinary Technician or Equivalent Licensure preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Work independently to identify and fulfill job requirements and objectives.
  • Assist with and provide primary care for Privately Owned Animals (POAs).
  • Aid Animal Care Specialists and Veterinary Corps Officers in their duties.
  • Determine vital signs of animals during medical evaluations.
  • Obtain clinical specimens from animals for laboratory diagnosis.
  • Place intravenous catheters and initiate fluid therapy.
  • Administer tranquilizers and sedatives under supervision.
