About The Position

The Florey Institute is one of Australia’s leading neuroscience research centres. We are seeking a detail oriented, proactive, and collaborative Animal Ethics Officer to support our research community and uphold the highest standards of animal welfare and ethical compliance. This pivotal role partners closely with researchers, veterinarians, Animal Ethics Committee (AEC) members, and governance stakeholders to ensure our animal based research meets the requirements of the Australian Code for the Care and Use of Animals for Scientific Purposes. Requirements

  • Degree in life sciences or a related field.
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to explain complex scientific information clearly.
  • Strong administrative, organisational, and time management capability.
  • Ability to interpret and apply policies, procedures, and legislation.
  • Proficiency with databases and Microsoft Office; ability to learn new systems quickly.
  • Understanding of the Australian Code and relevant legislation.
  • Experience supporting committees or similar governance functions.
  • Ability to translate scientific terminology into accessible language.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with AEC operations in Australia.
  • Experience developing training resources related to animal ethics.
  • Experience working with animals in a research environment

Responsibilities

  • AEC Administration & Support Prepare and distribute AEC agendas, track actions, and assist committee members with queries.
  • Attend AEC meetings and support accurate capture of decisions and discussion points.
  • Prepare and distribute AEC decisions, and triage amendment applications for out of session review.
  • Assist researchers with guidance on AEC processes and the Tick@lab online system.
  • Compliance & Governance Help maintain documentation, records, and reporting to meet regulatory requirements.
  • Support updating of AEC policies, procedures, and Standard Operating Procedures.
  • Engage with subject matter experts (e.g., Veterinarian, Category B members) to support technical advice.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement of the online ethics system (Tick@lab) and related resources.
  • Team & Culture Promote a culture of collaboration, integrity, and respect across the organisation.
  • Champion innovation, equity, diversity, and inclusivity within the Governance team and the broader Institute.
