About The Position

Essential Duties and Responsibilities: 1. Performs duties and responsibilities of a Shelter Attendant. 2. Investigates violations of animal control ordinances and issues warnings or citations as required. 3. Appears in courts to testify regarding animal control cases. 4. Responds to complaints concerning animal problems or violations of animal control ordinances, including but not limited to animals running at large, bites, property damage or injuries. 5. Care for, feeds and houses animals at the animal shelter. 6. Provides initial first aid care. 7. Provides maintenance and upkeep for the municipal shelter when necessary to assist the shelter attendant. 8. Removes dead, injured or dangerous animals. 9. Generate records and files of the animal shelter and the animals. 10. Compiles a variety of data as requested. 11. Prepares daily, monthly and annual reports of activities. 12. Participates in public relations programs in order to foster public awareness of ordinances regarding animal control and humane treatment of animals; works closely with the media, public interest groups and businesses to promote improved care and control of animals. 13. Work with volunteers and court ordered community service workers to perform animal shelter services. 14. Responsible for daily maintenance and upkeep of assigned vehicles that the Animal Control Officer operates. 15. All assigned duties and tasks are to be performed in an effective, efficient and safe manner. 16. Accept the responsibility to support and promote the organization’s mission, goal and objectives and comply with its directives. 17. Personal conduct and behavior (on duty as well as off duty) must be such that it does not discredit or endanger the public’s trust or confidence in the agency or its employees. 18. A high level of problem solving ability, self-initiative and the ability and willingness to work a majority of time without supervision. 19. Provides on-call coverage during off-hours for animal related emergencies. 20. Provides assistance to local law enforcement officials in animal related issues and other emergency situations pertaining to animal control. 21. Cross trains for dispatch duties. 22. Secures compliance by pet owners with adopted City codes and related rules and regulations. 23. Responds and investigates public complaints of alleged violations of City codes pertaining to animal welfare, noise complaints, nuisance complaints, deceased animal complaints, wildlife problems and other code-related matters as directed by the animal control supervisor. 24. Conducts inspections of private property regarding potential violations; interviews complainants and pet owners; compares facts observed during inspections to code requirements; determines whether or not violations exist; issues correction notices to pet owners as necessary. 25. Prepares and distributes a variety of investigative reports, correspondence, memoranda and notification letters relating to animal control issues and actions. 26. Provides information to the public who request assistance and supplies explanations of City code requirements regarding ownership of pets. 27. Coordinates enforcement efforts with the City prosecutor, animal control staff, police department and other City staff including outside agencies, as needed. 28. Prepares Municipal Court Information/Complaint forms for the City Prosecutor in preparation for Municipal Court judicial action; testifies as necessary in any judicial actions and makes recommendations for prosecution. 29. Conducts record checks of pet license tax records to determine pet ownership. 30. Coordinates the abatement of violations for those found guilty of animal abuse/neglect.

Requirements

  • Must be 18 years of age at time of employment.
  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Must be a United States citizen or authorized alien worker.
  • Valid Driver’s License and credible driving record.
  • Credible employment record.
  • No felony convictions or commission of or participation in any felony crime.
  • No on-going or repetitious history of committing or participating in misdemeanor crimes.
  • Must pass required testing
  • No experience required

Nice To Haves

  • Six months to one year of experience in a related field preferred, but not required.
