About The Position

This is a general summary of the responsibilities associated with the position of Animal Caretaker III in support for the NIH, Laboratory Animal Research Contract (LARC). This description is not all-inclusive of the duties required to successfully complete the job daily. It is intended to reflect FEFA’s contractual obligations. Employees are expected to complete all assigned duties each day as directed by management. Responsibilities of this position are that of an Animal Caretaker III. These responsibilities include all activities required for the proper care, handling and maintenance of on-site animals, equipment and facilities.

Requirements

  • A High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Employees must be ALAT certified or possess equivalent training and experience.
  • Must have the capability of performing the duties above without supervision. animal care experience. Must have the skills to perform the duties listed above with minimal supervision.

Responsibilities

  • Read, comprehend and follow all project SOPs and Performance Standards.
  • Perform daily animal health checks and report any abnormal animal conditions to the appropriate veterinary technician and /or supervisor.
  • Dispose of dead animals according to project SOPs and policies.
  • Ensure excellent animal care by providing animal cage changing, to include feed and water, following project SOPs and schedules established by management.
  • Sex and wean animals according to project schedules and SOPs.
  • Document daily and weekly facility duties according to project SOPs.
  • Maintain daily animal census sheets, room equipment and other forms according to project SOPs.
  • Clean and sanitize animal facility according to project SOPs and schedules set by management.
  • Maintain animal caging and support equipment.
  • Provide appropriate receiving for incoming animal shipments according to project SOPs.
  • Provide handling/restraint and manipulation of various animal species.
  • Assist Veterinary Technicians with minor technical procedures and treatments as directed by management.
  • Must be able to lift a maximum of 50 lbs, bend, stoop, climb and stand for a prolong period.
  • Perform all other duties as assigned by management.
