About The Position

The Animal Breeder III position is responsible for assisting the farm in meeting production goals while promoting safety and well-being for both self and team members. The role requires adherence to Animal Welfare and Bio-Security protocols, guidelines, and procedures at all times. The position is based in Houstonia, MO and reports to the Farm Manager.

Requirements

• 4-year degree in related field or equivalent experience in a similar production environment
• Regular and reliable transportation
• Basic math and computer skills
• Ability to multi-task in a fast-paced environment
• Ability to safely lift 50 pounds
• Attention to detail
• Ability to clean and organize work areas
• Interpersonal skills for working with other employees
• Continual walking and/or standing, up to 95% of the day
• Available to work overtime, weekends, and holidays as needed

Nice To Haves

• Familiarity with Bio-Security and Power washing
• Familiarity with swine production
• Previous farm experience preferred

Responsibilities

• Advanced sow/gilt care and handling (feeding/watering/moving/ventilation)
• Observe animals in heat to detect approach of estrus and exercise animals to induce or hasten estrus, if necessary
• Conduct advanced breeding functions (artificial insemination, heat check, day-one pig care)
• Perform necropsy and collection of tissue samples including PUC sampling
• Treat minor injuries and ailments
• Communicate with management and/or veterinarians to obtain treatment for animals with serious illnesses or injuries
• Stock supplies of feed and medicines
• Select animals to be bred and semen specimens to be used based on knowledge of animals, genealogies, traits, and desired offspring characteristics
• Examine animals to detect symptoms of illness or injury
• Record animal characteristics such as weights, growth patterns, and diets
• Brand, tattoo, or tag animals for identification
• Administer vaccines through various methods to protect animals from diseases
• Exercise animals to maintain their health
• Maintain logs of semen specimens used and animals bred
• Inject prepared animal semen into female animals for breeding purposes
• Prepare containers of semen for freezing, storage, or shipment
• Package and label semen for artificial insemination, recording relevant information
• Adhere to animal welfare guidelines
• Learn and utilize farm technology as necessary
• Attend safety meetings
• Clean and disinfect facilities, including removal of mortality and waste
• Check feed system and fill lines
• Perform production/facility housekeeping duties
• Complete any other tasks assigned by Assistant or Manager
