About The Position

The Animal Caretaker II position will be responsible for the daily observation of animal health and reporting of findings. On scheduled days soiled caging will be changed and fresh diet and hydration will be added. Assigned rooms will be maintained by sweeping, mopping, stocking supplies, and organizing. On occasion assistance in other areas will be required.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED or any equivalent combination of relevant education and experience.
  • Two years of relevant laboratory or animal care experience.
  • Animal health technician with AAALAS certification.
  • Ability to perform all tasks and job responsibilities in compliance with A&M System and HSC guidelines.
  • Provide a safe environment that fosters respect and engagement of all faculty, staff, students and visitors.
  • Computer skills in word processing and data entry.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in Higher Education/Research Institute preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Cleans animal cages and feeding equipment.
  • Prepares basic animal food, feeds and waters animals according to established guidelines and schedules.
  • Operates large cage washing machines, high pressure cleaner, floor scrubber machine, and wet/dry vacuum cleaner.
  • Collect, cleans, and sterilizes instruments with autoclave and chemical sterilant.
  • Washes laundry and maintains equipment.
  • Maintains sanitation and disease prevention conditions. This includes using sterile techniques when handling animals, cleaning and sterilizing floors, walls, and cubicle doors using high level disinfectants .
  • Prepares and autoclaves caging for special population animals.
  • Transports animals, bulk feed and bedding materials.
  • Assists with storing supplies which can include weekly large shipments of bedding and/or feed weighing up to 40lbs.
  • Handles and restrains animals for research personnel.
