The Large Animal Research Area (LAR) at Iowa State University is seeking a qualified candidate for the position of Animal Caretaker I. This role primarily involves working in an indoor setting with a variety of animals, including both large and small species such as mice, rabbits, cows, and pigs. The Animal Caretaker will be responsible for performing essential tasks related to the handling, feeding, and overall care of these animals, ensuring compliance with federal, state, and university regulations. The position is under direct supervision, allowing for guidance and support as the caretaker develops their skills in animal care. The Animal Caretaker I will work a regular schedule from Monday to Friday, 7:30 AM to 4:30 PM, with a rotating weekend schedule. Importantly, there is no on-call requirement for this position. Candidates must be legally authorized to work in the U.S. on an ongoing basis without sponsorship, which is a critical requirement for this role. In this position, the caretaker will engage in various tasks, including feeding and watering animals, preparing special diets, and maintaining accurate records of animal weights and feed. The caretaker will also be responsible for grooming, handling, and restraining animals, as well as cleaning and disinfecting animal enclosures and equipment to maintain a pathogen-free environment. The role may involve operating mechanical equipment and reporting any issues with heating and ventilation systems to the supervisor. Observing animals for signs of illness or stress and assisting in routine veterinary treatments are also key responsibilities. The caretaker will maintain records related to animal health and environment, ensuring that all documentation is accurate and up-to-date.
