About The Position

The Animal Care Technician at the University of Miami plays a crucial role in the daily care and management of various species of animals, particularly in a research environment. This position is essential for ensuring the health and well-being of research animals, which includes non-human primates and virus antigen-free rodents. The technician will be responsible for a range of tasks that include daily observation of animals, feeding, watering, and providing environmental enrichment. Additionally, the technician will sanitize and sterilize animal cages and equipment, ensuring a clean and safe environment for the animals. In this role, the technician will also assist veterinary and research staff with various procedures, such as the collection of biological samples and the administration of medications and treatments. The technician will monitor animal room conditions, including light cycles, temperature, and humidity, and will document these observations daily. The position requires the technician to receive and properly house animals and supplies from vendors, adhering to established standard operating procedures (SOPs). The technician will also be involved in preparing animal diets and operating autoclaves for sterilization purposes. Regular inspections of the animal facility will be necessary to identify any issues that need to be reported to supervisors or maintenance staff. The technician will observe animals for signs of injury or disease and assist with the treatment of sick animals as directed. Participation in the department's Emergency Response Team is also a requirement of this position, highlighting the importance of readiness and safety in the animal care environment.
