About the position

The Animal Care Technician 1 position at Northwestern University involves performing routine animal caretaking duties, including cage washing and basic technical skills. The role requires adherence to safety procedures and guidelines, reporting any deviations, and maintaining physical condition for efficient task performance. The technician will work on both the Chicago and Evanston campuses as needed, and must be available for a flexible schedule that includes weekends and holidays.

Responsibilities

• Cleans and sterilizes cages, equipment, supplies, and rooms according to CCM SOPs.
• Changes cages, equipment, supplies, animals, and rooms as required.
• Feeds and waters animals according to their prescribed diets.
• Observes animals regularly, noting and reporting any variances in eating, drinking, or behavior.
• Documents and reports changes in environmental parameters such as temperature and humidity.
• Conducts census counts and may administer oral or topical medications with training.
• Assists in organizing feed, bedding, and dry supplies in storage facilities.
• Houses incoming animals and ensures accuracy of transfer delivery documentation.
• Completes cage wash activities and caretaking check-lists accurately and timely.
• Attends training sessions and begins on-the-job cross-training among species.

Requirements

• A minimum of 3 months of cage wash, husbandry, or equivalent work or educational experience.

Nice-to-haves

• A high school diploma or its equivalent.
• Valid state driver's license if driving animal transport van.
