About The Position

As the only open-intake animal shelter in Buncombe County, we're always here for the animals in our community. Position Summary The Animal Care Supervisor oversees the cleaning and care of all animals and all animal care staff in both the Asheville Humane Society Adoption Center and the Buncombe County Animal Shelter. This position ensures that the highest level of care is provided to all animals on the Animal Care Campus. Schedule: This position works in the Buncombe County Animal Shelter. The typical work schedule is Sunday through Thursday from 9:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m. This position may require work outside the normal work week and on holidays. Compensation & Benefits: The annual salary range for the Animal Care Supervisor is $43,000 - $47,000. Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent required.
  • Experience working with animals in an animal shelter or similar environment.
  • Experience in supervising employees.
  • Experience developing and managing programs.
  • Knowledge of animal welfare and sheltering best practices.
  • Knowledge of proper animal care and handling techniques.
  • Knowledge of infectious disease transmission, prevention, cleaning, and disinfecting.
  • Strong interpersonal, organizational, written, and communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently, balance multiple projects, and meet deadlines.
  • Ability to work with volunteers and co-workers in a professional manner.

Responsibilities

  • Manages all Animal Care Staff, including hiring, scheduling, and conducting reviews and/or disciplinary procedures.
  • Conducts Animal Care Staff onboarding and ongoing training and education.
  • Implements animal care policies and program SOPs.
  • Maintains up-to-date knowledge of animal care and sheltering best practices to continually improve the standards of animal care and enrichment.
  • Conducts meetings with Animal Care Staff to keep open communication regarding cleaning protocols and organizational policies.
  • Performs periodic checks and reviews of animal areas to ensure that all cleaning protocols are being followed, animal care staff are working efficiently, and identify where improvements or updates are necessary.
  • Oversees the cleaning and maintenance of animal care assigned non-animal areas.
  • Performs periodic checks to ensure that animals receive their medications appropriately.
  • Maintains a working knowledge of all animals on the Animal Care Campus.
  • Identifies animal candidates for transfer opportunities, serves as the primary contact for transfer partners, and coordinates transfer details.
  • Identifies and builds relationships with new transfer partners and maintains relationships with current transfer partners.
  • Works cooperatively with the Senior Manager of Operations to coordinate animal transport to ASPCA Spay/Neuter Alliance and other partners as needed.
  • Works collaboratively with the Director of Behavior and Training to develop and maintain an animal enrichment program on the Animal Care Campus.
  • Collaborates with the Volunteer Manager to identify volunteer opportunities in animal care, oversees their training, provides assistance, and monitors staff interaction with them.
  • Oversees the maintenance of the donation area and ensures that donations are logged properly.
  • Ensures the highest level of customer service when interacting with the public.
  • Will obtain certification for humane euthanasia and will uphold all AHS euthanasia protocols as outlined in the Euthanasia manual.
  • Ensures organization and cleanliness of animal freezer and disposal of remains.
  • Assumes responsibilities and duties of the Senior Manager of Operations as assigned during times of absence.
  • Will obtain certification to be a certified rabies vaccinator.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
