About The Position

This position is responsible for the direct care and well-being of animals, including feeding, monitoring their health, administering medication, and performing minor treatments. Daily cleaning of assigned areas is a key duty. The role involves significant public interaction, assisting prospective clients in selecting animals for adoption, and advising new owners on pet examinations, adoption benefits, policies, and procedures. The Animal Care Specialist will also educate the public about SPCA of Texas programs, promoting good animal care and responsible pet ownership. Administrative tasks include maintaining inventory of program supplies and reporting shortages, as well as ensuring assigned equipment, supplies, and vehicles are in safe condition and reporting any necessary repairs. Confidentiality of customer and donor information must be protected. The specialist is expected to provide excellent customer service, actively engage with volunteers to support both volunteers and staff, and act as an ambassador for the SPCA of Texas by sharing its mission and ways to support its work. Adherence to assigned work schedules, including start times, breaks, and quitting times, is required. There is a potential requirement to operate an SPCA of Texas vehicle, provided the individual meets specific age and licensing requirements.

Requirements

  • Static Strength: the ability to exert maximum muscle force to lift, push, pull, or carry objects up to 40 pounds.

  • Ability to rapidly and accurately process information.
  • Must be 21 years old to meet insurance requirements (if operating an SPCA of Texas vehicle).
  • Must be qualified and licensed to operate a motor vehicle in the State of Texas (if operating an SPCA of Texas vehicle).

Responsibilities

  • Care for, feed, monitor, medicate, and perform minor treatment on animals.
  • Report observed health or behavior issues to ACC Supervisor/Manager.
  • Clean assigned areas on a daily basis.
  • Assist prospective clients in the selection of animals for adoption.
  • Advise new owners of pet examinations, adoption benefits, policies, and procedures.
  • Provide information to the public about SPCA of Texas programs and promote good animal care and responsible pet ownership.
  • Keep current inventory of necessary program supplies and report shortages to ACC Supervisor.
  • Maintain assigned equipment, supplies and vehicles in safe condition and report any problems or needed repairs to the ACC Supervisor.
  • Protect the confidential information on customers and donors.
  • Represent the SPCA of Texas by providing excellent customer service and focus.
  • Report to work at assigned start time; go to/return from breaks and lunch at assigned times; leave work at assigned quitting time.
  • Actively engage with volunteers in such a way that provides support for our volunteers and staff and proactively improves our volunteer program.
  • Be an ambassador for the SPCA of Texas, sharing the work and mission with your friends and family and be knowledgeable of the various ways to support our work.
  • Additional tasks assigned by ACC Supervisor/Manager.
  • Operate an SPCA of Texas vehicle and perform driver duties as directed if the individual meets the SPCA’s requirements to become a driver.
