About The Position

The Animal Care Cadet position at the City of San Antonio is designed for individuals looking to develop a working knowledge of animal care and control within municipal government. This role involves learning essential skills related to animal handling, compliance with animal control ordinances, and public education regarding responsible pet ownership. The position is offered at two levels: Animal Care Apprentice I and Animal Care Trainee, with responsibilities including capturing and transporting animals, assisting with investigations, and educating the public.

Requirements

• High school diploma or GED equivalent.
• Valid Class 'C' Texas Driver's License.
• Completion of the ACS Apprentice program (for Trainee level).
• Three months of animal control or animal handling experience (for Apprentice candidates).
• Six months of animal control, animal handling, or law enforcement experience (for external applicants).

Nice To Haves

• Spanish language skills (reading, writing, speaking).
• Texas Department of State Health Services Basic Animal Control Officer Certification or ability to obtain within 6 months of employment.

Responsibilities

• Learn chosen career track by observing and assisting professionals in the assigned department.
• Assist Officers with writing reports and records data on appropriate log/forms.
• Safely and humanely capture and transport animals, including those that are sick, injured, or potentially dangerous.
• Assist with investigative reports of animal bites and dangerous animals.
• Counsel and educate citizens regarding responsible animal ownership and ordinance requirements.
• Operate a light-duty truck under supervision for field investigations.
• Testify in court as needed.
• Assist with cleaning and maintaining assigned equipment and tools.
