About The Position

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Valid Florida Driver's License for required travel.
  • Experience in the care and handling of animals.
  • Basic understanding of animal behavior and welfare.
  • Some knowledge of the custodial care of domestic animals.
  • Ability to handle various species of animals in a compassionate and safe manner.
  • Ability to handle or restrain large and sometimes dangerous animals.
  • Ability to communicate orally and in writing.
  • Ability to understand and follow directions.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the general public, coworkers, elected and appointed officials.
  • Computer knowledge.

Responsibilities

  • Impounds animals and places them within the facility according to size, sex, needs, and circumstances involved in pick-up.
  • Feeds animals on a regular schedule and maintains an ample fresh water supply.
  • Provides basic grooming for the animals.
  • Administers medication to animals as needed.
  • Cleans and disinfects the operating room.
  • Maintains records on animals, noting all actions taken and ensuring accountability by keeping animals with their respective records.
  • Responds to routine questions and makes appropriate referrals to dispatch stations; prepares routine reports and maintains logs and files.
  • Cleans and disinfects kennels and cages to provide a suitable environment for the animals; conducts routine inspections of all animals and their cages for health and welfare, safety, and cleanliness.
  • Assists the public within the kennel as needed, including helping in the search for lost pets or when seeking to adopt a new one.
  • May collect monies and issue receipts for animal services fees; maintains logs and files.
  • Unloads and stores supplies such as feed, disinfectants, veterinary medicines, and equipment.
  • Assists in general shelter maintenance.
  • Performs all other duties as assigned.
