The purpose of this role is to oversee security and facility operations, and coordinate the care, feeding, handling, and humane euthanasia of research animals.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • 4 years’ work-related experience
  • Valid driver's license with a motor vehicle record (MVR) compliant with the Driving for University Business SAP.
  • CITI training on IACUC federal regulations required upon hire
  • IACUC Animal Occupational Health and Safety Certification required upon hire

  • Master’s degree
  • Certification as Laboratory Animal Technologist (LATG) through the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS)
  • Work-related experience in animal care in an agricultural, pet store, veterinary clinic, or laboratory setting
  • Experience in training, mentoring, and managing employees
  • Willingness to learn new skills and master multiple tasks quickly
  • General computer skills, knowledge of MS Office, and ability to master computer programs
  • Commitment to personal responsibility and value for safety
  • Excellent organizational skills and demonstrated ability to maintain accurate notes and logs and complete detailed work accurately

Responsibilities

  • Manage operations of a moderate-sized vivarium (mouse, amphibian, fish) including daily health checks; cage/tank changing and washing; animal, facility and personnel safety and proper handling of biohazardous waste.
  • Maintain standard operating procedures for animal care in compliance with regulatory requirements and university policies, and in familiarity with the needs of faculty investigators.
  • Purchase animal care supplies and maintain vivarium budget while forecasting expenses, monitoring expenditures, and identifying cost-saving opportunities.
  • Recruit, train, supervise and assess the performance of staff.
  • Provide orientation and training for faculty and student facility users in proper animal care, handling and restraint, as needed.
  • Maintain professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops, monitoring publications and establishing networks.
  • Coordinate and consult with attending veterinarian.
  • Develop a positive and productive working relationship with veterinarian and institutional care and use committee.
  • Provide data collection and maintain up-to-date records in compliance with local, state and federal statutes and regulations (incl. IACUC, OLAW, NIH).
  • Supervise the procurement, inventory management and quality control of animals, supplies and equipment.
  • Transport research and diagnostic animals as needed.
  • This position requires working some weekends, holidays and vacation periods (eg. spring break) to ensure continuity of daily animal health checks.
  • Perform miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.
  • Must be able to wear respiratory protective equipment if required based on research needs, occupational and safety requirements.
