About The Position

The Arizona Humane Society is seeking a dedicated full-time Animal Behavior Specialist to join their Behavior Team. This role focuses on executing a Fear Free positive reinforcement training philosophy, providing behavior evaluations, and assisting in behavior modification and kennel enrichment. The position is integral to maintaining a healthy capacity of behavior animals and involves direct communication with pet owners, adopters, and staff.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • At least 6 months of experience working in a shelter setting or certification in animal training or animal behavior.
  • Understanding of Operant/Classical Conditioning and ability to apply those concepts appropriately.
  • Ability to interpret canine and feline body language.
  • Promotion of positive reinforcement, force-free training methods.
  • Willingness to learn, receptive to coaching, and adaptable to change.
  • Ability to remain focused, calm, and productive in a fast-paced environment.
  • Excellent communication skills with attention to customer service.

Nice To Haves

  • Certification in animal training or behavior is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Assist the operations of the Behavior team by championing AHS' core values of innovation, compassion, and excellence.
  • Provide exceptional internal and external customer service as a member of a professional team.
  • Perform behavior evaluations and provide objective descriptions for disposition decisions.
  • Conduct behavior modification and kennel enrichment activities.
  • Communicate with owners, adopters, staff, and volunteers about pet behavior and suitability for adoption.
  • Assist medical staff with treatment and direct the flow of animals through the behavior department.
  • Train staff and volunteers on appropriate handling and bite prevention.
