About The Position

The Anesthesia Technician, under the general supervision of a Registered Nurse (RN) and/or physician, performs a variety of routine direct and indirect patient care activities and technical skills in the anesthesia setting in accordance with established departmental policies and procedures. This description outlines the essential functions of the position. The incumbent is expected to perform other similar and/or related duties as assigned after demonstrating competency.

Requirements

Responsibilities

  • Performs first-level troubleshooting and maintenance of anesthesia equipment and reports equipment status to Clinical Engineering; maintains equipment repair records.
  • Cleans and disinfects TEE probes and anesthesia equipment.
  • Prepares the operating room for anesthesia, including setup of appropriate IV solutions and fluid warmers based on procedure and/or physician request.
  • Provides anesthesia room setup, turnover, and technical support for all case types, including OB, Centennial, Chestnut Surgery Center, IVF, Cardiac, Trauma, Remote Sites, Endoscopy, Cancer Center, and Difficult Airway cases.
  • Supports and assists the difficult airway team with preparation and transport of airway carts and equipment.
  • Maintains required continuing education and participates in organizational performance improvement initiatives as directed.
  • Maintains anesthesia supplies and equipment, including ordering and restocking; performs daily and monthly quality control (I-Stat and other designated equipment).
  • Assists with equipment setup and supplies during emergency situations as directed by the physician and/or RN.
  • Provides age-appropriate care and demonstrates knowledge of developmental stages for adults, adolescents, children, infants & toddlers, and neonates.
  • Follows all policies and procedures related to anesthesia supplies, equipment, infection control, and body substance precautions; wears appropriate personal protective equipment at all times.
  • Performs daily inspection, cleaning, and safety evaluation of anesthesia equipment and supplies in assigned areas.
  • Removes faulty equipment from service, labels appropriately, and reports issues to Clinical Engineering and the Charge RN.
  • Maintains sterile fields when assisting with opening sterile supplies and promptly reports any break in sterile technique.
  • Ensures airway carts are appropriately stocked, maintained, and transported to the team in a timely manner.
  • Participates in staff development and mandatory annual in-service education; demonstrates initiative in learning new procedures.
  • Maintains appropriate PAR levels and demonstrates responsible, cost-conscious use of supplies and resources; communicates supply needs proactively.
  • Provides appropriate patient care within defined limits and independently sets up equipment and supplies for scheduled and emergency cases.
  • Follows detailed procedural protocols for setup, maintenance, cleaning, and sterilization of anesthesia and specialty equipment, including blood warmers, TEE equipment, anesthesia machines, and difficult airway carts.
  • Demonstrates initiative and the ability to work independently or with minimal supervision.
