About The Position

Tufts V.E.T.S. is a multispecialty emergency and critical care VECCS level 1 certified facility in New England. We are an affiliate of the Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine, at Tufts University, providing a unique environment that integrates learning into a busy private practice setting. Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Credentialed Veterinary Technician (CVT/RVT/LVT) – must maintain.
  • Degree in Veterinary Technology and/or Animal Science preferred.
  • Minimum of 2 years working in the veterinary field as a Credentialed Veterinary Technician.
  • Prior experience working in surgery, anesthesia, emergency and critical care, or specialty medicine preferred.
  • Minimum of 18 years old.
  • Excellent interpersonal relationship and communication skills.
  • Proficient at working with digital records, Microsoft Word/Excel, and Google Docs.

Nice To Haves

  • Veterinary Technician Specialist (VTA) desirable.
  • Advanced training and credentialing such as becoming a VTS is strongly encouraged.

Responsibilities

  • Restrain patients in a safe, effective and compassionate manner.
  • Keep hospitalized patients clean and comfortable.
  • Accurately complete anesthesia workup sheet for all ASA categories.
  • Alert a veterinarian of concerns regarding patients.
  • Maintain aseptic technique and assist in prevention of nosocomial infections.
  • Demonstrate ability to safely sedate animals for procedures or radiographs within all ASA categories.
  • Comfortable with setup, use, and interpretation of a multiparameter patient monitor including ECG, ETCO2, SpO2, Oscillometric blood pressure, and Doppler equipment.
  • Comfortable with multiple IV infusions.
  • Accurately assess vitals including TPR, pulse quality, respiratory effort, mucous membrane color and patient attitude.
  • Monitor and record anesthetized patient parameters including HR, RR, BP, Temperature, SPO2, EtCO2, Total volume of fluids received in all ASA categories.
  • Notify primary clinician of parameter changes/concerns in patient status.
  • Administer interventional therapy as advised by the primary clinician.
  • Keep accurate medical records.
  • Collaborate with the anesthesiologist or attending veterinarian on cases.
  • Partake in surgical nursing or central sterilization tasks as needed.
  • Assist with all husbandry and stocking tasks within the surgery/anesthesia service.
  • Perform diagnostic imaging, proficient with using non-manual restraint.
  • Venipuncture proficiency (jugular, cephalic, lateral saphenous and femoral veins).
  • IV, IM, and SQ injections.
  • Comfortable with arterial sticks and arterial line placement.
  • Calculate and administer medications as directed by treatment orders.
  • Display proficiency at ventilator use, safety and trouble shooting.
  • Help to maintain medical equipment and supplies as per service policies.
  • Participate in all aspects of patient admits and discharges.
  • Ensure that all surgical patients are assigned an anesthetist.
  • Facilitate visits between owner and patient.
