About The Position

The Anesthesia Clinical Assistant will report to the Nurse Manager of Perioperative Services and Director of Surgical Services and is an integral member of the anesthesia patient care team. The Anesthesia Clinical Assistant provides support and receives directives from the licensed Anesthesia provider in clinical settings. The Anesthesia Clinical assistant will provide support for routine cases involving the Anesthesia Department by assisting in the preparation and maintenance of anesthesia equipment and anesthesia delivery systems before and during anesthesia. The Anesthesia Clinical assistant lends clinical support during preoperative and interoperative procedures. The Anesthesia Clinical Assistant performs first level maintenance on anesthesia equipment and cleans, sterilizes, disinfects, stocks, orders, and maintains the routine anesthesia equipment.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma/ or GED equivalent
  • A minimum of two(2) years experience as an perioperative assistant, Anesthesia Clinical Assistant or equivalent experience.
  • Must be able to recognize and establish priorities and be attentive to details.
  • Must possess a strong work ethic.
  • Follows detailed written and oral instruction.
  • Requires basic reading, writing and simple arithmetic skills.
  • May operate basic equipment and machinery.
  • Demonstrates the ability to follow established and approved hospital policies and procedures.
  • Makes decisions based on detailed procedures; technical aids generally available.

Responsibilities

  • Maintains and organizes the anesthesia environment, equipment and supplies to facilitate department function in all anesthetizing area.
  • Must have thorough knowledge of the set-up, operation and trouble shooting of Anesthesia machines, monitors and ancillary equipment.
  • Responsible to assist with acquisition of all equipment/ supplies for anesthesia cases.
  • Will be knowledgeable of various aseptic techniques used for routine cleaning, Disinfecting Sterilizing and storing of all reusable equipment and supplies.
  • Maintains, inspects, and replaces as necessary a safe and secure sharps disposable System.
  • Maintains cleanliness of equipment cleaning area.
  • Maintains supply stock in workrooms and anesthesia workstations in rotational fashion.
  • Maintains the sterilization of carbon dioxide absorbers as scheduled.
  • Recognizes and adheres to universal precautions and principles of aseptic technique in All clinical activities.
  • Handles equipment and items correctly to insure ever-present availability and safety of Supplies and materials.
  • Assist with inventory, orders, and maintains departmental supply stock consistent with Departmental demand in collaboration with the Manager of Chain Supply or designee.
  • Provides Perioperative Technical support to anesthesia Professional staff for delivery of Patient care.
  • Reports anesthesia equipment in need of repair to supervisor and / or BMET
  • Provides Clinical support to anesthesia professional staff for delivery of patient care.
  • Maintains availability of necessary equipment in each operating room.
  • Makes available, assembles, and assists with the operation of specialized equipment such as humidification units, fiberoptic endoscopic equipment, and rapid infusion devices.
  • Demonstrates speed and timeliness in all duties, particularly preparation for emergencies and trauma procedures.
  • Performs under extreme pressure of life threatening emergencies.
  • Is calm and competent and makes recommendations to improve support
  • Assist anesthesia professional staff as required: Set ups for OR cases which include preparation of laryngoscope and intubation equipment Preparation and labeling of blank syringes IV bag and tubing set-up and set up of IV warming devices.
  • Assist during procedures such as peripheral nerve block, insertion of Invasive lines as directed.
  • Knowledge of the operation of specialized equipment such as humidification units, Fiberoptic endoscopic equipment, and rapid infusion devices.
  • Assist in preparation, positioning and draping of the patient for invasive monitoring/ procedure.
  • Aids in preparation of patients for major invasive monitoring and/ or difficult cases in the Line room / OR suite as directed by Anesthesia provider.
  • Preparation to include but not limited to BP cuff, ECG leads, Pulse Oximeter placement.
  • Assist and anticipates needs of Anesthesiology including invasive monitor insertion and procedures such as pulmonary artery catheter, central venous access, fiberoptic intubation and/or difficult airway situation.
  • Anticipates need for invasive monitoring according to daily OR schedule and prepares accordingly.
  • Evaluates availability of necessary equipment in each operating room.
  • Assures that the necessary equipment for intravenous/invasive lines is available as requested.
