About The Position

We are looking for an Android Engineer to advance our best-in-class apps, Merlin Bird ID and eBird that connect millions of people to birds worldwide. The Android Engineer will join a growing engineering team of six to eight application developers to design and develop mobile apps for the Cornell Lab of Ornithology (CLO). From early prototypes to production-ready features we are looking for someone who can contribute to this small team of creative engineers with a mission-driven and tech-forward approach. This position is ideal for someone who is eager deliver new features and functionality to a global user-base of birders and outdoor enthusiasts. This is a full-time position at 100% FTE. Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science or related field or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Three (3)+ years of experience of building production mobile applications, including designing, coding, testing, debugging Android apps in Java and/or Kotlin and deploying apps to the Play Store.
  • Experience with RESTful APIs to connect Android application to back-end services.
  • Understanding of Android’s design principles and interface guidelines.
  • Experience with code versioning tools, such as Git.
  • Project management skills to scope projects and translate requirements into deliverables and timelines for public software releases.
  • Strong communication skills to clearly articulate plans, and provide instruction effectively to all levels of management, staff, new partners, funding agencies, project participants, and visitors.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with all levels of management and staff internally and externally.
  • Strong interpersonal skills to develop trust with collaborators.
  • Provide high level of initiative to anticipate needs of the project and fulfill project objectives with very minimal supervision.
  • Ability to prioritize activities and exercise sound judgement in discussions with collaborators.
  • Experience working with inclusion, belonging, and wellbeing programs.
  • Experience working directly with people from various socioeconomic backgrounds.

Nice To Haves

  • Deep understanding of birds and the birding community.
  • Experience watching birds and working on projects to advance birdwatching and bird conservation.

Responsibilities

  • Design and develop applications for the Android platform
  • Ensure the performance, quality, and responsiveness of the applications
  • Work closely with mobile designers to sync design libraries with code
  • Identify and correct bottlenecks, and fix bugs
  • Help maintain code and improve code quality and organization
  • Stay up to date on latest Android technologies and trends
  • Contribute to the overall success of the mobile team
