About The Position

Coordinates the activities of personnel engaged in the Histology Surgical area. Maintains quality control of processes. Promotes retention of staff through recognition and promotion of teamwork. Promotes and encourages professional development of laboratory staff. Ensures optimal patient care standards through daily interaction and role modeling. Supports and facilitates a respectful and collaborative relationship between medical staff, hospital staff and laboratory staff. Provides instrument maintenance, teaches programs, trains staff, schedules and supervises the Anatomic Laboratory staff, conducts quality assurance procedures and produces statistical information and documentation.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of CAP checklist and OSHA regulations.
  • Knowledge of computer hardware equipment and software applications relevant to work functions.
  • Ability to schedule, direct, counsel and evaluate employee work and performance.
  • Ability to problem-solve and make decisions in accordance with facility protocols and regulatory agency requirements.
  • Ability to read, interpret and enforce departmental safety rules, equipment operating and maintenance requirements and policy and procedures.

  • Bachelor of Science Degree from a regionally accredited college/university, including: Education and training equivalent to 60 semester hours, at a minimum, include:
  • 30 semester hours of science courses that include:
  • Six semester hours of chemistry
  • Six semester hours of biology
  • Eighteen additional semester hours of chemistry, biology, or medical laboratory technology courses in any combination.
  • Three (3) years of experience in the Histology laboratory required.
  • Current applicable ASCP certification (Histotechnician (HT), Histotechnologist (HTL), Cyotopathology (CT), Pathologists Assistants (PA) required.
  • Successful completion of the HT II/HTL II checklist required.
  • Member in good standing with the American Society of Clinical Pathology required.
  • Maintains 12 CEUs each year.
  • Must be able to distinguish and discriminate between colors.

Responsibilities

  • Assists with selection, orientation, supervision, counseling, scheduling and evaluation of assigned staff.
  • Routinely assists Anatomic Laboratory Manager in laboratory safety training of staff and is completed as scheduled; assesses competencies; and maintains a safe work environment through safety rounds.
  • Participates in annual review of policy and procedures; enforces established performance standards and procedural protocols, ensuring proficiency and competency; implements, monitors and enforces safety policies and procedures.
  • Routinely assists the Anatomic Laboratory Manager in completion and/or resolution of incidents and/or feedback on B-Safe files.
  • Works closely with staff members to ensure surgical specimens are turned out in a timely fashion.
  • As part of technical aspect of the job, produces quality slides and/or stains.
  • Prepares for and participates in laboratory inspections.
  • Ensures that manuals and procedures are up-to-date and that procedures are performed as per College of American Pathologists (CAP) guidelines.
  • Ensures all procedures are performed in a safe manner and meet OSHA standards.
  • Operates, rotates and cleans laboratory equipment (ie. tissue processors, recyclers, H&E stainers, immunohistochemistry stainers, etc.).
  • Examines slides under microscope to ensure tissue preparation meets laboratory requirements.
  • Studies slides under microscope to detect deviations of quality of the stains and reports abnormalities for further study to a pathologist.
  • Maintains professional growth and development through seminars, workshops, and professional affiliations to keep abreast of latest trends in field of expertise.
  • Participates in meetings, committees and department projects as assigned.
  • Performs other related projects and duties as assigned.
