About The Position

AmeriCorps EXL offers a meaningful opportunity to support students' academic growth and personal development while being part of a dedicated team making a lasting impact in schools. Students are at the heart of our work. We are seeking proactive, adaptable, enthusiastic, and dedicated AmeriCorps EXL Mentors to support the academic and social emotional development of students in local area schools of Napa, California. We partner with schools to identify students who would benefit from a positive, adult role model. EXL Mentors play a key role in leading Active Recess activities with students. Each Member is placed at one school site upon hiring to serve for the entire school year (commuting among school sites is not a daily requirement.) The goal of the AmeriCorps EXL program is to provide comprehensive support to students. All students at the school site benefit from the support of organized, collaborative games and conflict resolution during recess and lunch. Students in need of additional supports will be assessed and assigned targeted services in literacy or math tutoring and/or placed in a social emotional mentoring group.

Requirements

  • Must be at least 18 years of age (17 with parental approval)
  • Clear criminal background check (DOJ and FBI; National Sex Offender Public Database)
  • Submit current, clear TB (tuberculosis) test
  • Must have at least a high school diploma or a GED by start date
  • Must either be a citizen, national, or lawful permanent resident alien of the United States (Due to federal grant restrictions, we currently cannot accept DACA recipients)
  • Passion for education and working with youth of all backgrounds
  • Organized, responsible, flexible, motivated and professional
  • Strong personal standards of excellence, ethics and integrity
  • Ability to be committed to a high standard of safety and be willing and able to comply with all safety laws and all the program’s safety policies and rules

Responsibilities

  • Active Recess: Structured and organized activities facilitated by adults in order to encourage students in games/sports while building conflict resolution skills during the core day and after school. Members are assigned a daily game that they facilitate and engage with students, focusing on supporting positive student behaviors.
  • Academic Tutoring: Lead daily 30-minute academic tutoring sessions with students 1-to-1, in pairs, or in small groups at least 4 days a week. Lesson plans are created and implemented by the Mentor and/or provided by the teacher or curriculum.
  • Mentoring Services: Mentors will work with students who need additional support in skill development, relationship-building, and personal growth. Lead 30-minute mentoring sessions with students 1-to-1, in pairs, or in small groups; one to two sessions per week. Mentors will support the same students throughout the course of the school year. Lesson plans are created and implemented by the Mentor, utilizing the provided curriculum.
  • Expanded Learning Support: Support the after-school program, COOL School, through engaging with groups of students during the homework hour, leading physical, interpersonal and enrichment activities. Members will support the student Winter Break and summer programs.
