About The Position

We are seeking enthusiastic and engaging American Sign Language (ASL) Instructor to lead short-term summer camp sessions for children. This per-assignment role is ideal for individuals who enjoy working with youth and are passionate about Deaf culture, inclusivity, and accessible communication. The instructor will introduce campers to foundational ASL skills through interactive, age-appropriate activities.

Requirements

  • Proficiency in American Sign Language.
  • Experience working with children in an educational, camp, or recreational setting.
  • Enthusiastic, patient, and engaging teaching style.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Commitment to inclusivity and accessibility.

Responsibilities

  • Design and deliver engaging lessons that: Promote an understanding of Deaf culture and the importance of inclusivity.
  • Introduce students to the ASL alphabet.
  • Teach basic communication skills, including: (1)Greetings and expressions: hello/hi, see you later, please, thank you, sorry, yes, no, fine, help, good, bad, (2) Personal and conversational signs: I/me, my/mine, your, what, where, when, how, who, why, understand / don’t understand, and (3) Common needs and concepts: hungry, thirsty, eat/food, bathroom, and similar everyday signs.
  • Reinforce learning through games, videos, group activities, and real-world conversational practice.
  • Create a positive, inclusive, and supportive learning environment for all campers.
  • Collaborate with camp staff to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for participants.
