About The Position

This position is part of the Work Study Program at Dallas College, designed for undergraduate students awarded Federal Work-Study funds through FAFSA. The role involves providing tutoring services to students in reading, phonics, vocabulary, and comprehension, while also supporting the classroom teacher in creating a positive learning environment. The position requires maintaining accurate records of student progress and participating in required training sessions related to literacy instruction and child development.

Requirements

  • Must be an undergraduate student awarded Federal Work-Study funds through FAFSA.
  • Must meet the Satisfactory Academic Progress standards set by Dallas College.
  • Enrolled in at least 6 credit hours (half-time) during Fall, Spring, and Summer semesters.
  • Must be a U.S. citizen or eligible noncitizen.
  • No outstanding institutional balances or registration blocks.
  • Must have reliable transportation to off-campus worksites (if applicable).
  • Completion of required Dallas College professional development training.
  • Strong reading, writing, and communication skills.
  • Patience, empathy, and a genuine interest in working with children and youth.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Ability to pass required background checks as mandated by the host organization.

Nice To Haves

  • Previous experience working with children or in an educational setting is a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Provide one-on-one or small-group tutoring to students in reading, phonics, vocabulary, and comprehension.
  • Assist students with homework assignments related to literacy.
  • Engage students in reading activities, games, and discussions to make learning enjoyable.
  • Support the classroom teacher or program staff in creating a positive learning environment.
  • Maintain accurate records of student progress and tutoring sessions.
  • Communicate regularly with the site supervisor regarding student needs and progress.
  • Adhere to all site-specific policies, procedures, and confidentiality guidelines.
  • Participate in required training sessions related to literacy instruction and child development.
  • Complete required Dallas College Professional Development training hours per academic year.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
