About The Position

Nephrology nursing is a specialty within the nursing profession that encompasses the care of individuals who are experiencing renal (kidney) issues and those who may be at risk for developing kidney-related problems. Nephrology department nurses provide episodic and chronic nursing care to patients by telephone or web portal to include assessing patients, refilling medications per standing orders, evaluating the patient's understanding of their medication regime, and providing education and advocacy to patients and their families.

Requirements

  • Demonstrates awareness and sensitivity to rights of patient/significant other, as identified within the institution. (Required proficiency)
  • Demonstrates awareness and application of safety issues as identified within the institution. (Required proficiency)
  • Demonstrates awareness of legal issues in all aspects of patient care and departmental functioning. Strives to manage situations in a manner, which minimizes risk to the patient and the institution. (Required proficiency)
  • Demonstrates competency in selected psychomotor skills. (Required proficiency)
  • Ability to communicate effectively using verbal, non-verbal and written methods. (Required proficiency)
  • Ability to perform mathematical calculations related to medication administration and equipment calibration.
  • Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference, and fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry.
  • Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations. (Required proficiency)
  • Registered Nurse - KSBN A multistate license with the ability to practice within the State of Kansas is also accepted. Required
  • Basic Life Support - BLS RQI, CPR or ACLS certifications may be required in lieu of or in addition to BLS depending on department. Must have within 90 days of hire.

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor's of Science in Nursing (BSN) Preferred
  • Experience in a clinic setting. Preferred

Responsibilities

  • Accepts pages and calls for the on-call physician and acts as a resource when the physician is unavailable (not sure how to phrase this to reflect that I am the "first call" during business hours.
  • Coordinates information and continuity of care between the hospitals, dialysis units, and physician's office.
  • Collaborates with interdisciplinary team to avoid unreimbursed expenses.
  • Complete physician billing in a timely manner.
  • Develops a collaborative plan encompassing strategies to achieve expected outcomes.
  • Identifies expected outcomes for a plan individualized to the patient or situation.
  • Analyzes assessment data to determine actual or potential problems, and issues.
  • Promotes infection prevention through use of standard precautions.
  • Implements identified plan through coordination of care and employs strategies to promote health and wellness.
  • Evaluates progress toward attainment of goals and outcomes.
  • Uses autonomy to work as a single nurse with 1 of 4 physicians during their hospital call week covering Stormont-Vail, St. Francis, and Kansas Rehab Hospital
  • Actively participate in the Joint Dialysis Oversight Committee.
  • Assists with assigning and scheduling acute nursing staff for inpatient dialysis patients.
  • Delivers professional nursing care guided by Jean Watson’s Theory of Human Caring illustrated by creating caring relationships, taking time to have uninterrupted moments with patients and displaying unconditional acceptance and respect.
  • Promotes a mutually respectful environment that encourages the exchange of ideas and supports the effectiveness of professional relationships and integrates ethics in all aspects of practice.
  • Demonstrates advocacy in all roles and settings.

  • Complies with all policies, standards, mandatory training and requirements of Stormont Vail Health
