About The Position

Responsible for supporting the electrophysiology service at SVH by utilizing expertise in EP device technology and nursing assessment skills. Functioning primarily at the Heart Center, but also at the hospital and/or outreach clinics, this position provides clinical expertise to the trans-telephonic pacemaker monitoring service, and the internet-based device monitoring service. The incumbent conducts periodic clinics to assess patient symptoms as they relate to implanted devices; interrogates and re-programs devices according to physician protocols; serves as a resource for all SVH staff for issues related to implanted devices, to include conducting educational sessions as needed and assessing new technologies. The delivery of professional nursing care at Stormont Vail Health is guided by Jean Watson's Theory of Human Caring and the theory of Shared governance, both of which are congruent with the mission, vision, and values of the organization.

Requirements

  • Demonstrates awareness and sensitivity to rights of patient/significant other, as identified within the institution.

  • Demonstrates awareness of legal issues in all aspects of patient care and departmental functioning. Strives to manage situations in a manner, which minimizes risk to the patient and the institution.
  • Demonstrates competency in selected psychomotor skills.
  • Ability to communicate effectively using verbal, non-verbal and written methods.
  • Ability to perform mathematical calculations related to medication administration and equipment calibration. Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference, and fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.
  • Registered Nurse - KSBN A multistate license with the ability to practice within the State of Kansas is also accepted. Required
  • Basic Life Support - BLS RQI, CPR or ACLS certifications may be required in lieu of or in addition to BLS depending on department. Must have within 90 days of hire.
  • Complies with all policies, standards, mandatory training and requirements of Stormont Vail Health
  • Performs other duties as assigned
  • 20% Travel between clinics.

  • Bachelor's of Science in Nursing (BSN) Preferred
  • Experience in a clinic setting. Preferred
  • Cardiovascular nursing experience. Preferred

Responsibilities

  • Conducts rounds on all patients having devices implanted, educates patients/family and coordinates enrollment in follow-up processes.
  • Oversees functioning of trans-telephonic and internet-based device checking systems and makes recommendations for improvement.
  • Assures that all patients receiving EP device implants at SVH and/or all patients enrolled in follow-up programs are tracked and scheduled for device checks at appropriate intervals.
  • Conducts outpatient clinics to assess patient symptoms and evaluates function of implanted devices.
  • Interrogates and reprograms implanted devices according to physician-approved protocols.
  • Works closely with physicians and administrative staff to develop processes to improve care to patients with implanted devices.
  • Evaluates the patient’s progress towards achieving outcomes.
  • Performs efficiently in emergency patient situations following established standards of care.
  • Practices effective problem identification and resolution as a method of sound decision making.
  • Greets patients and prepares them for provider examination.
  • Collects patient history information.
  • Instruct patients in collection of samples and tests.
  • Triages and refers incoming telephone calls.
  • Instructs patient and family regarding their devices.
  • Maintains an up-to-date database of all patients with implanted devices.
  • Maintains an up-to-date knowledge base of devices and related technology.
  • Reviews new technologies and makes recommendations regarding implementation.
  • Participates actively in clinical education activities, including orientation of new employees and teaching student nurses.
  • Participates in nursing research activities.
  • Performs event monitor/holter hookups.
  • Triages and refers incoming telephone calls.
  • Instructs patient and family regarding medications and treatment instructions.
  • Delegates tasks and duties in the direction and coordination of health care team members, patient care and department activities in accordance with the Kansas State Nurse Practice Act.
  • Schedules appointments for device checks.
  • Seeks validation of knowledge base, skill level and decision making as necessary and assertively seeks guidance in areas of question.
