About The Position

The Ambulance Billing Specialist I position at the City of Tucson's Fire Department is a first-level role responsible for performing billing for Advance Life Support transport claims. This includes follow-up with Medicare, Medicaid, primary and secondary insurance companies, and private payers to ensure claim accuracy. The specialist must possess a broad knowledge of federal and state regulations related to insurance carriers and be proficient in ICD-10 codes, medical terminology, and human anatomy for billing purposes.

Requirements

• 6 months post high school education.
• 1 year of directly related work experience.

Responsibilities

• Conduct billing procedures including demographics and insurance verification.
• Assign applicable diagnosis and procedure codes.
• Conduct additional follow-up as needed.
• Reconcile data reported on Patient Care Reports with dispatch information.
• Refer reports to proper channels for corrections or follow-up.
• Receive incoming calls to accept payments and make payment arrangements.
• Process inquiries from attorneys, patients, and insurance companies.
• Assist with appealing insurance claims.
• Follow up on accounts that need further actions to secure reimbursement.
• Process Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) signature forms and returned mail.
• Perform other duties and tasks as assigned.
