About The Position

The Nebraska Department of Transportation (NDOT) is seeking a highly motivated Professional Engineer to join its Project Development Division. This role offers a unique opportunity to lead and manage critical components of the Alternative Delivery process, supporting some of NDOT’s most innovative and complex projects. These projects may involve construction manager / general contractor (CM/GC), or other alternative delivery methods. Some assigned projects may be traditional design-bid-build delivery methods but follow an Environmental Assessment workflow. As a key member of the division, the Alternative Delivery Engineer will: • Oversee project development activities from early planning through execution, ensuring compliance with state and federal requirements. • Coordinate across diverse stakeholders, including internal NDOT teams, engineering consultants, independent cost estimators, contractors, and partner government agencies. • Facilitate collaboration and communication to align project goals, schedules, and budgets, while proactively identifying and resolving challenges. • Support innovation in project delivery, helping NDOT evaluate and implement strategies that improve efficiency, reduce risk, and enhance outcomes for Nebraska’s transportation system. • Ensure successful delivery of projects by balancing technical rigor, fiscal responsibility, and stakeholder engagement. This position requires not only strong technical expertise but also leadership, organizational, and communication skills. The selected candidate will play a pivotal role in shaping how NDOT delivers some of its most high-profile and forward-thinking projects, contributing directly to the safety, mobility, and economic vitality of communities across Nebraska. Pay range is $40.990 -$60.425 per hour. The pay rate may be commensurate with education and/or experience within fiscal constraints if approved.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in an engineering discipline and one year of experience performing professional level engineering assignments.
  • Must possess a Professional Engineer (P.E.) license at the time of application and be licensed by the Nebraska Board of Engineers and Architects at time of employment or be able to obtain such license within 90 days of employment.
  • Occasional out-of-town travel, infrequent overnight stays.
  • Requires a valid driver's license or ability to provide independent authorized transportation.
  • Regular and reliable attendance is also required.
  • Knowledge of basic engineering principles related to the design and construction of highway projects.
  • Familiarity with NDOT's Roadway Design Manual, Drainage & Erosions Control Manual, and Standard Specifications.
  • Strong organizational and public relations skills.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently, or lead part of a small interdisciplinary team.

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering.
  • Progressively responsible licensed professional experience in an applicable engineering field and experience in supervising professional engineers and/or technical engineering workers.
  • Experience interpreting complex manuals and applying standards, policies and procedures

Responsibilities

  • Project Management & Oversight Lead and manage projects utilizing Alternative Delivery methods (e.g., Design-Build, CM/GC).
  • Guide projects through Environmental Assessment workflows, ensuring compliance with federal and state regulations.
  • Monitor project schedules, budgets, and deliverables to keep initiatives on track.
  • Stakeholder Coordination Serve as the primary liaison between NDOT and external partners, including engineering consultants, independent cost estimators, contractors, and government agencies.
  • Facilitate collaboration across multidisciplinary teams to align goals and resolve conflicts.
  • Communicate project updates and technical information clearly to both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Technical Leadership Provide engineering expertise in evaluating design proposals, construction methods, and cost estimates.
  • Review and approve technical documents, ensuring accuracy and adherence to standards.
  • Identify risks and propose mitigation strategies to improve project outcomes.
  • Process & Innovation Support NDOT’s efforts to expand and refine Alternative Delivery practices.
  • Recommend process improvements that enhance efficiency, reduce costs, and accelerate delivery.
  • Stay current with industry trends, best practices, and regulatory changes affecting project development.
  • Compliance & Quality Assurance Ensure projects meet environmental, safety, and quality standards.
  • Oversee procurement processes and contract administration for Alternative Delivery projects.
  • Verify that all documentation and reporting requirements are met.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
