About The Position

The Nebraska Department of Transportation (NDOT) is seeking a Professional Engineer to help manage projects in the Alternative Delivery Unit. This is a key position in the Project Development Division that helps manage components of the Alternative Delivery process, supporting some of NDOT’s most innovative and complex projects. These projects may involve design-build, construction manager / general contractor (CM/GC), or other alternative delivery methods. Some assigned projects may be traditional design-bid-build delivery methods but follow an Environmental Assessment workflow. This candidate may also assist with tasks in the Development & Delivery section (as assigned) including NDOT's Project Scoping Unit, Project Studies Unit, or Geodetic Unit. Pay range is $35.641 -$52.539 per hour. The pay rate may be commensurate with education and/or experience within fiscal constraints if approved. If unable to fill at the Professional Engineer I level, we will consider applicants at the Engineer level which requires a bachelor’s degree in an engineering discipline. Pay rate for this classification is $31.265 per hour. Requirements

  • Engineer: Bachelor’s degree in an Engineering discipline. Must obtain Engineer Intern Enrollment (Engineering in Training Certification) within one year of employment.
  • Professional Engineer I: Bachelor’s degree in an engineering discipline. Must possess a Professional Engineer (P.E.) license at the time of application and be licensed by the Nebraska Board of Engineers and Architects at time of employment or be able to obtain such license within 90 days of employment.
  • Engineering degrees must be from an EAC/ABET-accredited program (or evaluated by NCEES as equivalent).
  • Must have valid driver’s license or the ability to provide authorized independent transportation.
  • Overnight travel will be required on occasion.
  • Regular and reliable attendance is also required.
  • Knowledge of Nebraska Board of Public Roads Classifications and Standards Minimum Design Standards, AASHTO Design Policy, ADA Accessibility guidelines, State and Federal regulations, policies, and guidelines applicable to highway projects, general transportation related engineering, design, and construction principles such as surveys, drainage design, geometrics, roads, bridges, and culverts.
  • Strong organization skills.
  • Ability to clearly and effectively communicate, both verbally and in written form, with individuals and different levels within an organization or the public.
  • Ability to read, understand, and interpret project plans, agreements, and other contract documents.

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering.
  • Licensed Professional Engineer in the State of Nebraska.
  • Two years’ experience in roadway design and/or highway construction.
  • Experience in project coordination.

Responsibilities

  • Facilitate and help manage projects utilizing Alternative Delivery methods (e.g., Design-Build, CM/GC).
  • Review submitted plans and other technical documents ensuring accuracy and adherence to standards.
  • Advise consultants of non-conformance issue, document requirements, or other information needs and facilitate reasonable solutions.
  • Evaluate design proposals, construction methods, and cost estimates.
  • Identify and assess risks to project delivery and coordinate with the necessary individuals to develop and implement risk mitigation.
  • Assist in the development of scopes of services, legal agreements, and contracts for consultants.
  • Monitor project schedules, budgets, and deliverables to keep initiatives on track.
  • Simultaneously, manage multiple projects that are at various stages of completion.
  • Coordinate with external partners such as engineering consultants, contractors, independent cost estimators, utilities, cities, counties, other agencies, etc.
  • Schedule and facilitate project related meetings and distribute meeting minutes as necessary.
  • Attend and participate in public information meetings, public hearings, field inspections, and NDOT Departmental meetings as needed.
  • Maintain electronic files to ensure correspondence, agreements, submittals, transmittals, and other documents are present and organized.
  • Complete special projects as assigned by the Division.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
