About The Position

The Alternate Media Specialist at North Orange County Community College District plays a crucial role in ensuring that students, staff, and community members with disabilities have access to all instructional and service offerings provided by the college. This position is responsible for overseeing the production of various forms of alternate media, including E-text, large print, Braille, and audio recordings. The specialist will consult with the college on accessibility issues related to electronic media, such as closed/open captioning, kiosks, teleconferencing, and descriptive audio. Additionally, the role involves managing requests for supplies, hardware, and software, maintaining accurate inventory records, and ensuring that all instructional materials are received and processed efficiently. The specialist will also provide training and assistance to students in the use of adaptive computer technologies and equipment, while maintaining records on the configuration and location of access technology across the campus. Collaboration with instructional technology services is essential for the installation and configuration of these technologies. The role includes providing in-service training to college personnel to ensure that electronic information meets access guidelines, as well as offering technical assistance to various departments, including the Book Center, Library, and computer labs. Staying current with emerging technologies in the alternate media field is vital, as is maintaining a comprehensive database of materials and orders. The specialist will develop a resource bank of access strategies for distance education and assist college personnel in designing web pages and distance education materials that comply with access guidelines. A positive and constructive attitude is essential for maintaining effective working relationships with supervisors, co-workers, faculty, staff, students, and the community. The position requires sensitivity to the diverse backgrounds of students and a commitment to fostering an inclusive educational environment.
