About The Position

Alterations Academy Intern supports the alterations team by assisting with garment alterations, preparation, fittings, administrative tasks and workroom operations while gaining hands-on experience in garment construction and fit. This internship program is designed for fashion design students who want to develop technical skills in tailoring, garment construction, customer service and leadership skills

Requirements

  • Currently enrolled (graduated) in a Fashion Design or related program at schools Saks Global offers Alterations Academy Program
  • Basic Knowledge of sewing and garment construction
  • Interest in tailoring, garment fit and alterations
  • Strong attention to detail and craftsmanship
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced workroom environment
  • Strong organizational and time management skills
  • Willingness to learn and take direction from experienced alterations professionals
  • Coursework in patternmaking, garment construction or tailoring
  • Experience using industrial sewing machines
  • Prior experience in tailoring or alterations workroom
  • Understanding of garment fitting principles
  • Knowledge of working with knits or other specialty fabrics
  • Ability to read English and understand instruction by Manager, Supervisor, or Lead
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide in all units of measur

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in a tailoring operation or industrial sewing environment, with exposure to a variety of garment styles and types of fabrics, is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Assist artisans with basic and complex alterations
  • Support garment preparation including opening seams, measuring and marking and organizing garments for alterations
  • Perform stock repairs, spot cleaning and steaming of garments
  • Observe and assist during garment fittings to gain understanding of garment fit, tailoring techniques and interacting with customers
  • Assist with finishing work including pressing, steaming and quality checks to ensure garments meet company standards
  • Support daily workflow by helping alterations managers and artisans track garments through the alterations process and by utilizing alterations system
  • Learn how to alter different fabrics and garment types including tailoring, dresses, denim and evening wear
  • Assist artisans with special projects including creating patterns and draping for custom orders
  • Learn Leadership skills withing a retail environment
  • Follow company policies and safety procedures when using sewing and pressing equipment
  • Partner with artisans and Alterations manager on working on a final project to demonstrate techniques learned during the program.
