About The Position

This is supervisory airport crash/fire/rescue work protecting life and property at the St. Petersburg-Clearwater International Airport. Employees in this class serve as uniformed airport firefighters, responding to actual or potential air-crash emergencies, on and off the Airport, and supervise a unit of Airport Firefighters during an assigned shift. Work includes responsibility for the proper operation and maintenance of station and crash/fire/rescue equipment/rescue boat and in conducting crash/fire/rescue training exercises. Employee will be required to command Aircraft incidents in the absence of the Airport Fire Chief. This Airport Fire Lieutenant position is located at: 14700 Terminal Blvd., Suite 221, Clearwater, FL 33762 Work Schedule: 24 hours on; 48 hours off

Requirements

Candidate must provide evidence by sworn affidavit to be a non-user of tobacco or tobacco products for at least 1 year immediately preceding application plus possess and maintain a valid Florida Certification as a Firefighter and Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) plus 5 years’ experience in airport crash/fire/rescue operations, or
An equivalent combination of training, education, and/or experience.
Possession and maintenance of a valid Florida Driver’s License.
Assignment to work a variety of work schedules including compulsory work periods in special, emergency, and/or disaster situations.

Responsibilities

Conduct “quarterly inspections of fueling facilities and/or airport refueling tankers to maintain 14 CFR Part 139 requirements.
Respond to airport standby, fire and crash alarms and supervises and assists Firefighters at the fire scene.
Inspect fire apparatus, equipment, station, fuel, and the surrounding grounds to ensure proper order conditions.
Drive aircraft firefighting and rescue vehicles to crash scenes or to prearranged runway positions in anticipation of disabled aircraft landing.
Operate vehicle turret nozzles and pumping equipment to spray foam onto runway surface to minimize danger of explosion or fire upon impact and applies water and chemicals to aircraft after landing to prevent extinguish flames.
Respond to water rescues.
Rescue aircraft crewmembers and passengers from wreckage using specialized cutting equipment and administers first aid to the injured.
Perform first-response structural firefighting and rescue work on Airport property and establish fire-lines to secure crash areas from unauthorized entry.
Inspect and perform preventative maintenance on firefighting and rescue equipment, conduct training sessions and exercise and reviews and prepare shift and incident records and reports.
Monitor and operate Airport Protective Service radio and telephone communications equipment in accordance with federal, state and local regulations.
Schedule leave for personnel and write annual performance appraisals.
Perform other related work as assigned or required.
