Salary and Schedule: The Intern II salary is a competitive hourly rate of $21.00/hr. All internship positions are full-time, with standard department working hours, and require a commitment to working on-site for a 9-week program.

Internship Snapshot:
Step beyond the terminal and onto the airfield operations! The Airside & Terminal Operations department is seeking an enthusiastic Airfield Operations Intern II. The selected candidate will gain firsthand exposure to the fast-paced environment that keeps aircraft moving safely and efficiently every day. This internship offers a practical introduction to airport safety oversight, operational coordination, and regulatory compliance while working alongside professionals responsible for maintaining continuous airfield operations during peak travel season and ongoing construction activity. Safety, communication, and real-time decision making are key components of this role and come together to support a complex aviation ecosystem.
Through this internship, you will build foundational knowledge of airport operations, regulatory compliance, and safety practices while developing adaptability, situational awareness, and professional communication skills in a live operational environment.

Requirements

• Students currently enrolled in at least twelve (12) units at an accredited college may qualify.
• Students in their final semester or quarter who need less than full-time enrollment to graduate with four (4) year degree need only be enrolled part-time in courses required for degree completion.
• Educational major must be related to area of interest.
• Applications without a copy of transcript(s) attached will not be considered.
• Successful completion of a post-offer pre-employment medical examination and an alcohol/chemical substance test is mandatory.
• A thorough background investigation, including an FBI fingerprint based criminal history records check, of your references and employment/education history from the last 10 years will be conducted. This includes a visit to our Access Control Office inside Terminal 2 in the San Diego International Airport, be camera ready!
• Submission of documentation proving citizenship or legal authorization to work in the United States is essential, complying with the Immigration Reform Act of 1986.
• Timely completion of all required onboarding forms.

Responsibilities

• Conduct daily airfield operational, security and safety inspections in accordance with Part 139 FAA and Transportation Security Regulations (TSR) regulations.
• Assist with issuing and updating Notice to Airmen NOTAM in accordance with changes on the airfield.
• Support the airport Safety Management System (SMS) program through hazard identification, risk management, and mitigation.
• Observe and assist with safety risk assessments and compliance recordkeeping.
• Assist with resource management functions while working directly with airline and tenant partners to support efficient operations.
• Support the wildlife hazard program activities and emergency preparedness planning efforts.
• Assist with airfield construction coordination and operational continuity planning.
• Support operational teams responding to dynamic situations during peak demand periods.
