About The Position

Responsible for the safe, orderly, and expeditious flow of air traffic control duties in a Visual Flight Rules (VFR) Airport Traffic Control Tower. Works under the general supervision of the tower manager who relies on the incumbent to perform established duties independently. On new or revised procedures, the manager gives detailed instructions and observes and checks work, during or immediately after completion, according to the complexity of the task until satisfied the incumbent can perform it independently.

Requirements

  • Must have a minimum of 2 years of experience as an Air Traffic Controller.
  • Individuals must have a current or previous Control Tower Operator (CTO) Certificate.
  • Individuals must have a current Class II Medical Certificate.
  • Individuals must have held a Control Tower Operator Certificate (CTO) with a facility rating for a minimum of two years in an Air Traffic Control Tower.
  • The position is subject to drug and/or alcohol testing per the DOT/FAA requirements.

Responsibilities

  • Make decisions involving the order of departures to assure all aircraft equitable treatment.
  • Ensure departing IFR flights operate at the fix, altitude, and time designated by the center or approach control clearances.
  • Determine the times and direction of takeoff and any necessary turns after departure.
  • Decide whether inbound aircraft should land immediately or circle.
  • Control the active runway and possible simultaneous use of other runways.
  • Interspace arrivals and departures with the least delay to traffic.
  • Clear landing and departing aircraft to use the runways to assure standard separation.
  • Sequence arriving traffic before it enters the traffic pattern.
  • Apply IFR separation standards as delegated by approach control or the center.
  • Sequence VFR and IFR traffic and provide initial separation using radar equipment.
  • Authorize VFR flights through Class D airspace when appropriate.
  • Determine the usability of communications frequencies and navigational aids.
  • Monitor navigational aids and control panels, including tower radar display.
  • Instruct pilots to change radio frequencies/transponder codes.
  • Coordinate with other controllers on the movement of both arrival and departure aircraft.
  • Preplan traffic sequencing and separation over an area when traffic conditions warrant.
  • Maintain a continuous mental picture and evaluation of constantly changing traffic.
  • Maintain continuous radio watch with aircraft that have previously contacted the facility.
  • Study weather reports and forecasts to determine the effect of weather on traffic.
  • Orient pilots of aircraft lost or in difficulty and notify necessary services.
  • Perform lower grade level duties as necessary for operational requirements.
  • Provide on-the-job training (OJT) to others.
