About The Position

The Air Traffic Control Specialist is responsible for the safe, orderly, and expeditious flow of air traffic control duties in a Visual Flight Rules (VFR) Airport Traffic Control Tower. This position works under the general supervision of the tower manager, who relies on the incumbent to perform established duties independently. For new or revised procedures, the manager provides detailed instructions and observes the work until the incumbent can perform it independently.

Requirements

• Minimum of 2 years of experience as an Air Traffic Controller.
• Current or previous Control Tower Operator (CTO) Certificate.
• Current Class II Medical Certificate.
• Must have held a Control Tower Operator Certificate (CTO) with a facility rating for a minimum of two years in an Air Traffic Control Tower.
• Subject to drug and/or alcohol testing per DOT/FAA requirements.

Responsibilities

• Ensure the safe and orderly flow of air traffic in the control tower.
• Make decisions regarding the order of departures and arrivals of aircraft.
• Control the times and direction of takeoff and any necessary turns after departure.
• Determine whether inbound aircraft should land immediately or circle.
• Manage the active runway and possible simultaneous use of other runways.
• Interspace arrivals and departures with minimal delay to traffic.
• Clear landing and departing aircraft for runway use while ensuring standard separation.
• Sequence arriving traffic before it enters the traffic pattern for safe landings.
• Apply IFR separation standards as delegated by approach control or the center.
• Manage the sequence of VFR and IFR traffic using radar equipment when delegated.
• Authorize VFR flights through Class D airspace when appropriate.
• Monitor navigational aids and control panels to ensure proper alignment and display presentation.
• Instruct pilots to change radio frequencies and transponder codes.
• Coordinate with other controllers on the movement of arrival and departure aircraft when necessary.
• Preplan traffic sequencing and separation over a radius of 5 miles or more when traffic conditions warrant.
• Maintain a continuous mental picture of changing traffic conditions and maintain radio watch with aircraft that have previously contacted the facility.
