About The Position

Provide assistance for an auditory/visually impaired student and other students with sensory impairments as needed.

Requirements

  • College hours (15) or high school diploma/GED (with a passing score of 464 on the ParaPro test)
  • Ability to communicate effectively
  • Ability to maintain effective working relationships
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality
  • Ability to work with children with disabilities
  • Ability to follow verbal and written instructions
  • Minimum clerical skills
  • Paraprofessional Educational Aide II certificate required once employed
  • Knowledge of students with sensory impairments
  • Willingness to participate in ongoing training in visual/auditory impairments
  • Willingness to assist with toileting, feeding and other self-help skills

Nice To Haves

  • Ability to use sign language preferred
  • Completion of two-year program of studies in the Intervener for Deaf-Blind Persons preferred

Responsibilities

  • Adhere to federal, state, and local policies and procedures related to special education aides.
  • Participate in planned inservices and professional growth activities.
  • Assist in carrying out the instructional program for assigned students.
  • Assist in maintaining student records and audit folders.
  • Assist in the preparation, use, and maintenance of instructional materials, equipment and technology.
  • Assist with teacher-planned activities, exercises, and drills.
  • Attend professional meetings as required.
  • Become proficient in student’s individual communication methods and strategies.
  • Maintain communication between home and school, and keep a daily log of information about the student’s activities.
  • Participate in student staffings and ARD meetings as necessary.
  • Serve as a resource to other staff on issues related to auditory/visual impairments.
  • Interact in a professional manner with administrators, teachers, staff, students, visitors or other individuals and participate as an effective team member.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the teacher, principal, or Instructional Officer for Hearing and Visually Impaired or as determined by specific area of assignment.
  • Other SHARS Duties as assigned.
  • Provide Personal Care as identified in applicable student IEPs.
