About The Position

Help meet physical and instructional needs of individual students with disabilities inside and outside classroom. Assist with the implementation of Individual Education Plans (IEP), including self-help, behavior management, and instruction programs. Work under general supervision of principal and immediate direction of certified teacher.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or hold a General Educational Development (GED) certificate
  • Have met formal academic assessment, associate’s degree, or two years of study at an institution of higher learning
  • Valid Texas educational aide certificate
  • Ability to assist in instructing reading, writing, and mathematics
  • Ability to work well with children
  • Ability to communicate effectively
  • Some experience working with children

Responsibilities

  • Instructional Support Work with individual students or small groups to develop skills and conduct instructional activities assigned by teacher.
  • Assist with administration and scoring of objective testing instruments or work assignments.
  • Help maintain neat and orderly classroom.
  • Help teacher keep administrative records and prepare required reports.
  • Provide orientation and assistance to substitute teachers.
  • Student Management Help meet the individual needs of student(s) including transferring to and from wheelchairs; lifting and positioning; interpreting instructions; and assisting with physical needs and personal care.
  • Help manage the behavior of assigned student(s), including crisis intervention and restraining disruptive or dangerous student as needed.
  • Recognize differences in each student’s special medical, physical, communicative, and emotional needs and adapt methods and interaction accordingly.
  • Supervise and ensure safety and security of students in the classroom, on outings, and to and from areas outside the classroom.
  • Make the teacher aware of special needs or problems of individual students.
  • Other Participate in staff development training programs to improve job performance.
  • Participate in faculty meetings and special events as assigned.
  • Display tolerance necessary for accepting supervision for and criticism of job performance.
  • Work in harmony with supervisory, faculty, and peer personnel.
  • Use professional information discreetly and judiciously.
  • Support and follow administrative and Board policy.
  • Represent the school system to the community in a positive, professional way.
  • Maintain a sincere, friendly attitude toward patrons.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
