About The Position

The Center for a New American Security (CNAS), an independent, bipartisan research institution dedicated to developing strong, principled, and pragmatic national security and defense policy prescriptions for a wide audience of security experts, practitioners, and citizens, seeks one AI Systems Coordinator for summer 2026 to support its Director of Operations and business teams in identifying and solving operational challenges through the application of artificial intelligence tools and workflows. This temporary summer position (June-August 2026) is designed to give an early-career AI practitioner hands-on experience applying AI solutions in a real-world nonprofit and policy environment and includes a stipend of $3,500 per month. This is not an AI policy research position. Building on the deep expertise and broad experience of its staff and advisors, CNAS engages policymakers, experts, and the public with innovative fact-based research, ideas, and analysis to shape and elevate the national security debate. Requirements

  • Currently enrolled in or recently graduated from an undergraduate or graduate program in computer science, data science, information systems, or related field
  • Demonstrated experience working with AI tools, large language models, or automation platforms
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to explain technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders
  • Interest in public service, national security, or nonprofit operations
  • Legal right to work in the United States

Responsibilities

  • Assess and document current operational processes across CNAS business functions to identify opportunities for AI-driven improvements
  • Design, prototype, and implement AI-powered workflows and tools to streamline internal operations
  • Collaborate with the Director of Operations and cross-functional teams to identify process innovation initiatives
  • Develop clear guidance for sustaining AI-enhanced process recommendations after the summer term concludes
  • Participate in and contribute to the success of CNAS programming and events
