About The Position

As a Red Team Engineer in the telecommunications industry, you will play a critical role in proactively identifying vulnerabilities and security gaps within Verizon’s infrastructure and applications. This role focuses on emulating real-world adversarial techniques to evaluate and improve Verizon’s defensive capabilities, ensuring the security of customer data and network infrastructure. You’ll blend cutting-edge offensive security research with custom adversary tool development and local AI infrastructure. You will collaborate closely with internal teams to scope and execute offensive engagements. As an Engineer III, you will work under the direction of project leads to plan and execute tests targeting applications, devices, and platforms supporting the Verizon network. If you live for breaking things, weaponizing research, reverse-engineering hardware/firmware, and running private LLMs that help you generate exploits on-prem, this is the role for you.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree or three or more years of relevant work experience.
  • Three or more years of relevant work experience, demonstrated through one or a combination of work and/or military experience, or specialized training.
  • Knowledge of security testing processes or adversarial techniques.
  • Strong experience deploying and running local/open-source LLMs.
  • Strong Linux knowledge.
  • Experience with security testing tools such as Burp Suite, Cobalt Strike, Nmap, Metasploit, etc.

Nice To Haves

  • Deep experience in testing in-home products such as home routers and wireless extenders.
  • Automation and tool development (Python, Bash, Ansible, or custom frameworks).
  • Knowledge of wireless protocols.
  • Strong reverse-engineering skills (Ghidra, IDA Pro, Binary Ninja, radare2, frida, etc.) on both software and firmware.
  • Experience maintaining virtualized infrastructure using VMware ESXI and Proxmox.
  • Network or cybersecurity-related professional certifications.
  • Familiarity with security challenges in running large enterprise-scale networks, wireless core components, cloud, and edge computing.
  • Experience in network engineering, routing, switching, BGP, stateful or stateless firewalling, load balancing, or proxies.
  • Experience in telecommunications systems, protocols (SIP, SS7/Diameter, TR-69, etc).
  • Knowledge of 4G/5G core network architecture and supporting systems.
  • Deep knowledge of network architecture and cloud environments (e.g., Kubernetes, OpenStack, OpenShift).
  • Strong communication and teamwork skills.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct offensive security research across web, mobile, hardware, and embedded systems, turning discoveries into repeatable attack techniques.
  • Design, develop, and maintain custom adversary tools, implants, C2 frameworks, and emulation platforms tailored to real-world threat actors.
  • Deploy, configure, tune, and maintain local Large Language Models (LLMs) on-prem or air-gapped environments to accelerate research, code generation, payload obfuscation, and automated attack chaining.
  • Perform deep-dive security assessments and red-team exercises on the Verizon network and its offered in-home products.
  • Build and maintain automation pipelines that scale red-team operations, including fuzzing, exploit delivery, telemetry collection, reporting, and continuous adversary emulation.
  • Reverse engineer firmware, binaries, mobile apps, and hardware interfaces to uncover zero-days and design novel exploitation paths.
  • Collaborate with defense teams and Remediation Assurance to translate red-team findings into real defensive improvements.
  • Support the organization’s overall cybersecurity strategy and address the unique challenges of securing large-scale telecommunications systems.
  • Execute Penetration Test or Red Team projects that identify vulnerabilities in wireline/wireless network infrastructure and supporting applications.
  • Identify, exploit, and report vulnerabilities in critical telco systems and infrastructure.
  • Execute Penetration Tests or Red Team campaigns that provide comprehensive feedback on the security posture and risks of applications, devices, and platforms deployed to the Verizon network
  • Deliver comprehensive technical reports that outline findings, supporting artifacts, and remediation recommendations.
  • Work closely with stakeholders to scope projects appropriately and work within the team to share information.
  • Stay updated on the latest attack techniques, tactics, and procedures (TTPs) relevant to the telecommunications industry.
  • Provide insights to enhance the organization’s security posture through collaboration with peers in both security and operations.
