About The Position

The Department of Agricultural Commissioner/Weights and Measures is seeking candidates for the position of Agricultural/Weights & Measures Inspector I. This role involves inspecting orchards, farms, nurseries, mills, apiaries, and plant shipments for agricultural pests and diseases, ensuring compliance with pest quarantine measures. The inspector will monitor pesticide use, enforce agricultural product standards, and inspect weighing and measuring devices used in commercial transactions. The position requires the ability to gather and compile information, prepare reports, and respond to inquiries from the public and other agencies. The role also involves using various tools and equipment, providing training, and acting as a witness in legal cases.

Requirements

  • A Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with specialization in agricultural science, biological science, chemical science, physical science, mathematics, and/or statistics.
  • One (1) year of experience at the level of the Los Angeles County class of Associate Agricultural/Weights & Measures Inspector performing agricultural or weights and measures inspection functions for a public jurisdiction.
  • A valid State of California weights & measures license in either Weight Verification or Measurement Verification.
  • A valid State of California agricultural license in Pest Prevention and Plant Regulation.
  • A valid California Class C Driver License.

Responsibilities

  • Inspects orchards, farms, nurseries, mills, apiaries, and plant shipments for agricultural pests and diseases.
  • Monitors pesticide use by commercial applicators.
  • Inspects and enforces agricultural product standards for fruits, vegetables, and eggs.
  • Inspects produce cases, nursery stock, commodities, and other packaged goods weighing 25 pounds or more.
  • Inspects, tests, seals or condemns weighing and measuring devices used in commercial transactions.
  • Inspects shipments for compliance with labeling, weighing and measuring codes.
  • Performs test purchases or sales to verify accurate weight or measure.
  • Gathers and compiles information and prepares reports.
  • Issues citations or violations and collects appropriate fees.
  • Maintains records and prepares reports on inspections and pest control activities.
  • Uses a variety of hand-held or other equipment such as refractometers, scales, and laptop computers.
  • Receives and provides training in the safe and effective use of various tools and equipment.
  • Uses a variety of mathematical formulae, including algebra.
  • Acts as a witness in administrative, criminal and civil cases.
  • Responds to inquiries and complaints from other agencies and the public.
